Assuming the diode was wired in series with the lamp it probably did cause the lamp not to light at all after you removed the earth, but it would not have caused any burning wires !

And by the way you should not need a diode !

Hi Paul,

The Ig lamp and its earth wire were the reason it was ON all the time - running off the battery to earth.

The diode was probably blocking the current to the lamp. Please remove the diode it should not be there.

When you turn off the ignition but the engine is still continuing to run then as you note it is being powered from the Alt which is not being disabled from the Ig switch.

When you converted from Dynamo to Alternator what did you do with all the wires that went to the control box - this is probably the source of the problem.

IanC has a description of Alt mod and its wiring in the Tedchnical CD available form the office.

I will try once more.

1. Stuff is happening and you dont understand why

2. in the main loom there is at least one thick wire that runs direct to the battery WITH NO FUSE!

3. if you overheat the loom and the insulation fails and it finds earth, the battery will release at least 3kW and you wont be able to turn it off

4. work out now what you will do then

Greetings again, First, I by-passed the diode and ign light still did not work. For reasons I will never understand, the motor stopped running when the key was turned off when diode was not on-line so for now anyway the diode is not necessary.

The smoking end to my short ride was caused by a poor soldering job (mine).

During last few trips, ammeter shows negative charge only, battery has gone from near 13v to 12..3 today. Tomorrow I will have a pro test alternator. My test showed 11.8 today.

I have had auto-electrician (vw) in the past re the ignition light. After four hours of checking, he could not find problrm either. Also had a meister auto electrician install the four way warning blinker, as I couldn't get it to work. It turned out relay was defective. I'm off to another specialist tomorrow. Car sure runs well though.
