Tr3a Wing Bolts in Boot

Recommended Posts

Using them will also help your boot lid clearance down each side as well. Dont forget the last one at the bottom each side goes into a separate elongated "L" shaped bracket that protrudes rearwards to hold the wing in front of the rear light tight into the back panel.

Its fitted to the last of those mushroom headed bolts in the boot aperture, its on the outside and is a bugger to fit as you need long arms to hold the plate up behind the wing and then get the screw engaged from the boot side, the long side of the plate with the "L" leg faces inward just behind the rear light.

Hmm,

Sounds like a real pita, do you consider it as necessary? <_<

As it is now i have a captive nut in that position on the wing

Hi Guy,

There is quite a distance from the last hole in the boot aperture to the point where the wing mates with rear panel and the light unit is fitted. Also the leg serves to apply pressure where the first beading tag and keeps it in position. There is a slight upward rise in the wing at this point and by using the dogleg clamp you apply pressure at the point where the mushroom bolt goes through and also right into the top corner of the wing and this holds the beading in profile.

PITA - Yes! worth the trouble - definately! Given that the body shell is "live" in other words it flexes you potentially run the risk of the beading springing up and perhaps scratching paint and starting rust in a very inaccessible area. The clamping effect appears not to matter but it does and ST whilst they did some strange things this was not one of them.

This is what you are looking for:

Hi Chaps,

My rear wings were attached in the boot area channels with 1/4 Unf with bolt type head.

Is this correct , if so its not very pretty <_<

Cheers

Guy

As Tom says 552443 is the correct item.

I used MGA floor board washers and 1/4 unf countersunk screws (door hinge). All being a low profile to clear the boot lid edge.

Its not so much a case of bloodied knuckles its more like seeing how far your arms can stretch and how dexterous your fingers are to line the bolt and the bracket up. Then there`s doing it up without it turning.

Hi Guy,

I just noticed that the MG Leacy link shows the bracket which is not correct.

The picture of the wing fitting kit shows what you need. The captive is on the opposite side to the right angle so that it clamps and sort of bites and forces the corner of the wing close.

Shame the Macy kit does not include the correct cone pointed screws to help line things up.

See HU706P - 3/4" long x 1/4" unf cone pointed hex head screw. I think they are still available from the right sources.

plus 552443 - Mushroom headed 3/4" long x 1/4" unf cone pointed chemical black.
