Metering Unit

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys, I'm a new member trying to find my way around the site, I am the proud owner of my first TR6 CR PI I have always had wedges in the past and still own one as well, my problem started the other day with a seal leaking on the fuel filter, I changed the filter and seals no probs, bled all the air out started the car no leaks, then strong smell of petrol, traced the leak to the MU the leak appears to be coming out of the rear of the MU next to the bulk head. Have any of you knowledgable guys out there any ideas, HELP.

Useful info here:

Leak might be blocked return pipe. Has MU been converted to run on unleaded fuel? - if not seals may have deteriorated and you'll likely need a Lucas PI specialist such as Prestige.

Thanks Peter, my MU and pump are Bosch so I assume it will be much the same.

Nibbo,

The link below is a good resource for all things MU. Chances are the diaphragm seal has split, allowing fuel from the MU into the control unit area.

http://www.lucasinjection.com/Lucas%20Mk2%20manual%20page%2011.htm

The seal is easy-ish to change as long as you dont touch any adjustment nuts etc, but to be honest if the diaphragm is split, then it may be worth getting the MU overhauled as the rest of the rubber in there may also be on its last legs. Search on here for recommendations, mine was done bu Neil Ferguson (K Raven Smith and was a first class job)

Cheers

Andrew

Word of Warning!

Because of the proximity of the Distributor and live spark...any fuel vapour leaks can erupt and cause an engine fire! I speak from experience! :(

So DO carry a Suitable Fire Extinguiser in your car at all times!

Cheers guys, been intouch with "Anglian Triumph Servises" about 20 miles from where I live, he can replace the MU from off the shelf £340 fitted, which don't seem to bad. Thanks for all your advice.

Seems outrageous considering K Raven Smith sells an exchange one for 100 quid and its a 30min job to swap...

Btw - I didn't mean to be flippant - I swap these things without thinking twice but I guess if you are not confident and the garage in question is local then go ahead - just seems a bit steep considering the price of what seem to be well regarded units from Neil Ferguson.

Even if I bought one off the shelf from Rimmer's it's still £270 + £150 surcharge on exchange unit, things are pricey here in uk !!! and if it don't change it will stay the same !!!!

Nibbo,

Dont buy one..get yours refurbished by Neil. He can take yours, clean it, replace all the seals and get it back to you in quick smart time. Neil IS in the UK and we were talking pounds..not dollars.

Up to you though, just trying to save you money.

Use the search for K Raven Smith or Neil Ferguson and you can see some of the feedback and his details.

Several items reconditioned by Neil have passed through my hands en route to TR pals overseas. I have inspected them carefully, and to my eyes a decent standard of reconditioning at an exceptionally reasonable price, nothing there that I'd question.

Usual disclaimers, don't think I've ever even met Neil, just liaised by phone and email for the benefit of others.

Cheers,

Alec
