Tour of Cheshire

Recommended Posts

Following TR4Tony's informative recent post previewing the HRCR Clubmans' road rally Championship for 2011, the first round is now just four weeks away (5th March); the Tour of Cheshire is always a well-supported event and this year the entry list was full at 75 cars with two reserves a good five weeks before the date:

www.tourofcheshire.co.uk/entries_current.html

Seven TR's are entered, from a TR3a to a TR7 V8 and a posse of TR4's, with a couple of Mk1 Triumph 2000 saloons as well. It's too late now to enter but if you are near to the area do come along to spectate or better still, help by marshalling. Keep an eye on the website for spectator info the week before the rally.

oh dear.

"We dillied and dallied, dallied and dillied:

Lost me way and now we can't compete".

Ian off doing the Wyedean Rally with Mart, and Robert perhaps skiing, we have no entry. Let that be a lesson to oneself!

Have fun

Oh Kev, what are you like?? You should know by now the speed at which the entry fills up for this one - I had noticed your absence on the entry list and assumed you were giving up rallying for hillclimbing this year.....

As usual I promised myself that my TR4 was going to be ready in good time for this season, and as usual it's in bits again, sitting in the workshop with no back axle. We will be starting this year with a single venue all-tarmac stage rally the Sunday before the 'Cheshire', so hopefully the car will be back together for that and not in bits again for the following weekend.

It is good that it is over-subscribed.

As the year goes on the entries reduce which is a bit of a shame.

The Cloverleaf last year was excellent, and they struggled to half fill the entry.

Even the East Anglian earlier in the year was not full.

They were both excellently organised.

Has anyone done the Throckmorton Challenge?? Is new to teh HRCR championship this year. We fancy giving that a go.

My driver (sounds good eh!) and I have an appointment with the roads (tracks?) on Salisbury plain again, but this time with a bit of underside protection for the TR6. That was so much fun, and we made such a hash of it last year... :-)

I think we may also be doing a tarmac event, as that is what Mike is aiming for with the replacement TR6, it is a more hard core machine than the current one.

Cheers

Hi Colin

The Throckmorton Challenge is actually quite a different event to most others in the HRCR series as its primarily tests, and very much in the Irish Autotest style as they are complicated and easy to get wrong (so you get a max test time on them .... which is usually much worse than going relatively slowly round, however frustrating that might be). The tests are on the old airfield site, so you can get up to maximum speed for short bursts and the surfaces are various but not damaging so its good for most cars. The field was mixed from an AC Aceca, bundles of 911's and Escorts etc. etc. and obviously a little blue TR4.The day finished last year with 3 regularities, probably to calm everyone down, and it was a cracking day. Ricahrd lambley and I were 3rd overall and 1st in Class, with some seriously quick guys in a plastic lotus and Howard Warren in his lively 911 in front .

  • 3 weeks later...

Looks a good selection of cars entered - Sunbeam Tigers, Healeys (including a Jensen Healey )

Looks like a good group/gaggle/herd/flock of TRs - 4 x TR4, 1 x TR4A :)

As soon as the spectating information is posted, I'll decide on my vantage point :D

Good luck to all the TRs

Regards

One TR4 less now, I'm afraid....we did the Oak Leaf Stages rally at Swynnerton yesterday, the TR was impressively quick compared to last year, proving more than capable of holding it's own amongst the 'moderns' (although we do move over for the WRC cars...) but we had to back off a bit on the last stage owing to a mechanical problem which can't be fixed in time for the T of C.

But not to be defeated, Les and I will be lining up this Saturday in my Mk1 Triumph 2000 instead, still a Triumph if not the right model. At least Les will have more room to unfold his maps than in the TR! Should please Dazzer too......

Hi Nigel

Sorry to hear about the mechanical problem with WKE but great news about the 2000. I think you'll do well and Les will be very pleased with the navigator accomodation. More than can be said for our 2000 which I'm struggling to get the TR4 carb transplant to work.

Today I ripped everything off again and have rebuilt my third set of TR4 carbs and if anyone wants to know the smallest detail or settings for the 175 Stromberg variant; different float heights dependent upon float material; needle valve washer thickness the modern replacements are wrong; Varience of venturi lengths on the 4 and 4A carbs... they are different, then ask me. I've become an expert. Tommorrow is a fit and all day test session again.

Lots of understeer on the 2000 on tarmac unless you can get it to handbrake round, on the loose its much easier and the back end comes around easily.

Team 2000 and a set of TR4 carbs helping us along.

Cheers

Well, Darren, it sounds like you have really made a rod for your own back with those carbs! Hope you get it sorted for Saturday. I have to do all the basic things to my 2000 before then - throttle return springs etc, not to mention a tripmeter for Les to play with, otherwise the preparation schedule is 'don't mend what ain't broke'! I hadn't really expected to use it so soon and what with all the effort concentrated on getting the TR ready for this years' stages the 2000 has been left cold and lonely in the corner all winter. I had been looking forward to some flamboyant fun on the tests but now I'll be just cruising round; at least I'll have Charles in front to show me the way to thread a 2000 through the cones. All three 2000's more or less together, perhaps it was meant to be!

I'm disappointed about the TR4 but looking forward to it all the same.

Hi Nigel

Just a note to save you a job, the integral throttle return springs on the throttle shafts are accepted by the scrutineers, no need to add externals if it helps.

You'll probably get better times cruising round, at the moment ours is hesitating... no thats an understatement, dying on full throttle would be closer to the truth, however my MK3 carbs and heat shields will hopefully cure this. Yes I should have stuck with the standard carbs although if I can get them to work reliably.

See you Friday.

Nigel

Sorry to hear the news on the TR4, but they do fix well (!)

If you need bits Im calling in at TR Enterprises tomorrow en route and ill have the box on the back, so can carry spares !

See you all early for the Team entry !

Thanks for the offer, Tony, but there's no need - WKE is already there! I trailered it over yesterday, and Steve's ace mechanics had already found a broken top ring on no.4 piston, replaced it, and were putting it back together before lunch today. Steve was expecting to be road-testing it this afternoon. Fantastic news!

Without knowing the possible extent of the damage earlier this week I had to assume the worst and change the entry to the 2000. As it happens I want TRE to sort a couple of other things while it's there so will be picking it up next week. There's every chance I'll be doing more Clubman's events in the TR this year as well as the stages.

There may be a chance of a saloon team entry now there's three Triumph 2000's....

See you there

Nigel

Tour of Cheshire Historic Road Rally

Spectator Guide.

On Saturday 5th March 2011 Knutsford and District Motor Club will be running a Historic Road Rally in and around Cheshire and a neighbouring county

About 75 vehicles from the 50s, 60s and 70s will be taking part; they will be navigating their way around the beautiful and interesting Cheshire and nearby countryside. Throughout the day they will complete an almost circular tour of around 140 miles, starting and finishing near Beeston and stopping at places of interest and heritage sites. If you would like to see the 75 crews participating and take in the sight of historic cars such as Triumph TR3s and TR4s, Mini Coopers, Sunbeam Rapiers, MGA and MGBs, Austin Westminsters, early Ford Escorts, Sunbeams Alpine and Tiger, Hillman Imps, Mercedes, Lancias, Alfa Romeos, early Porsches, and many other vehicles (see below for how you can access the full list of cars and crews), we have compiled a list of Public Houses and other locations along the route that will hopefully give a great vantage point for watching the event, whilst making a great place to stop and take in the hospitality of some of the area’s finest pubs. (We cannot promise they will all be open at the time the rally passes, however, but some certainly will!). Please park carefully so as not to impede the rally, customers nor members of the general public. The rally will take about 1 1/2 hours to pass. Most of the other locations which the cars visit are private and spectators cannot be admitted. Times below are approximate. Note in the event of bad weather or other problems the route and times may have to be altered at the last minute.

 Woodland car park near Oulton Park race circuit (just W of the main entrance). Cars approach from the south, then turn right at a tee junction to pass the entrance to the race circuit on their right. There are woodland parking areas near the tee junction. This is quite early on the first regularity section. Note the rally does NOT enter the race circuit. Cars approach from the S and depart to the E, first car due 9.00 am.

 Shrewsbury Arms pub on A54 near Common Side. Cars use a short stretch on A road to pass the pub. On a regularity section. Cars approach the pub from the SE and depart to the W, first car due 9.02 am.

 High Legh Garden Centre on A50 at High Legh. Coffee stop for competitors and a test in the car park. A good spectating spot. Garden centre shop and cafe will be open, but please do not impede or delay competitors and do follow marshals’ directions. First car due 10.15 am.

 Antrobus Arms pub on A559 near Antrobus, crossing A road. On a regularity section. Cars approach from the NNE and depart to the SSW, first car due 11.10 am.

 Hanging Gate pub at crossroads of B5153 and B5142 in Weaverham. On a transport section. Cars approach from the N and depart to the WNW, first car due 11.25 am.

 Shady Oak pub, Wharton’s Lock, near Tiverton. Canal-side pub. On a regularity section. Cars approach from N, first car due 12.30 pm.

 Egerton Arms, Broxton. A41 and A534 intersection. Cars cross the roundabout from W to E and some may take on fuel at the filling station. On a transport section. First car due 2.25 pm.

 Swan Inn in Marbury. A pleasant village to linger and spectate. On a regularity section. Cars approach from W and depart to NE, first car due 3.20 pm.

 Whitchurch, (Shropshire) near town centre. Park in the shopping area near the traffic lights 1/3 mile WNW of the railway station. An ‘urban’ setting to watch the rally but plenty of facilities close at hand. On a transport section. Cars approach traffic lights from NE on yellow road, and depart to NW on brown, first car due 3.45 pm.

We hope you can get out and enjoy the spectacle of our motoring heritage weaving its way through the countryside and also give support and/or a donation to the North West Air Ambulance - a charity which the Tour of Cheshire and Knutsford & DMC are supporting. If you would like more details of the event (including the full entry list) and the North West Air Ambulance then visit the event web site at www.tourofcheshire.co.uk

Got to Beeston just in time to see most of the TRs go through.

Here's some photos

Here

Have to admit the two Sunbeam Tigers sounded fantastic.

Many a TR owner would want that BMW registration....

Results now on the website:

Les and I enjoyed cruising around in leather-and-wood comfort in the 2000, but missed the power and agility of the TR4 on the tests of course.

As it turned out, thanks to the excellent team at TRE the TR was fixed in time for the rally, but I had changed our entry to the saloon by then so decided to stick with it. I'm glad I did as it turned out, and may well use it for more road events, keeping the TR4 for the stages: well, that was the idea of buying it in the first place!

Commiserations to Tony for rattling Beastie into the steel cattle pen railings at the Beeston test just before lunch, some unfortunate body damage but he recovered and still claimed a top ten result; two TR4's in the top ten, in fact.

Good stuff, guys - sounds like it was fun. Sorry to hear about Tony's issues with the scenery - my rally TR4 is at the body shop right now too (issues with another competitor on the Winter Rally - I must get around to the full write up).

I suspect, Nigel, that although the 2000 may not have been as much fun as the TR (ia ANYTHING????), your navigator Les probably found the extra space quite eye-opening  Don't let him get too comfortable in there or he'll be wanting it ALL the time................

And nice photos, Peter. Those TR's look purposeful! Yes, so do the Tigers, but having engines that size just has to be cheating ;).

Hi all

Only paint and a door, sill and a few dented wings .... thankfully the spectators were fleet of foot and managed to scramble before I collected the metal post which they were standing behind with the passenger door ...... ! Still not quite sure how we managed to get airborne so rapidly but Im assuming from watching others that the hidden dip we hit at speed was sufficient to do the job.

As Nigel said Richard and I managed to sort the car out quickly, check everything over and continue and Im pleased that we got a bit of a result on this very competative event.

Now, where's my hammer .....

The event was great fun and I have to say Nigel your 2000, although not a TR looked pretty damned smart and beautifully poised on the tests (we were two cars behind) and you were running a standard ageing engine, imagine what you could do with a bit more power. Saying that we were constantly sideways and lost... on tests! I sometimes think standard is probably the way to go, gives you time to figure out where the hell you are going!

Commiserations to TR Tony as well, a great finishing result though. If its any consolation it makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck to see someone driving with such determination in a beautifully prepared TR4, I reckon if he'd completed the test without the interjection of the metal post it would have been a very fast time indeed. It's good there are still devotees willing to push expensive metal to the limit. Plenty of works drivers had cosmetic altercations in their hey day.

On that subject we... I nearly totalled the hut just round the corner from this incident, sliding sideways at a fare rate of knots, my navigator screamed... but l was in complete control ... honestly . by the grace of God

Poor chap in a Porsche on a short car park test also had a meeting with the shrubbery.

Looking forward to the ilkley Jubilee.

First time we've done the tour of Cheshire and a superbly organised event it is.

Hi Dazzer

Yes I watched Paul Wignall nail the tree line in his orange 911 2.7......lots of speed and bumpy things meant bent front suspension and steering so Paul and Fred Bent couldnt continue.

I had a look at the hut as we went round too - scabby old thing but would have been equally messy if youd chosen to get into it.

Had Beastie on the ramp today and all the stiff bits did their job, so Im only looking at some panelwork and a bit of powder blue paint so I dare say Ill be on the road to TR Enterprises shortly. The car was built for rallying, so battle scars are inevitable and part of the cars rich history !

Regards
