bolt sizes UNF or UNC????

Recommended Posts

Steve.

Best to go for a big bag of SS UNF with washers etc. UNC's on a TR are very few,so buy them in small bags as you need them.

I to would like to know where the best buy for a big bag of mixed SS UNF can be bought from???

Agree with Dave, judging by the Brown Bible torque settings, UNF are used exclusively in the engine (and pretty much everywhere else). There are a couple of sellers on Ebay I've used for UNF nyloc nuts, might be worth an enquiry :

Why use weak stainless, anywhere, except for a bit of bling?

This lack of easy access to UNF, excpet in glamourous S/S, alarms me! Are we to be elbowed out of the normal supply chain for fasteners, by metric taking over?

I went to my usual eBay supplier of N&B (Auruncas), expecting to be able to point you there. I found that they have specialised to exclusively stainless bolts. I don't think that stainless steel is suitable for suspension applications, among others. So I did an eBay search, for "UNF Bolt -stainless".

I found three items. THREE! In the whole of eBay!

All are N&B packs from eBay shops:

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/CHASE-MG-PARTS-STORE

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/StayFast-Industrial-Supplies-Ltd

and

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Watford-Classic-Cars

The other way is to look up "Fasteners" in Yellow pages and talk to the counter staff at your local shop.

Even so, I've noticed that mine suck their teeth and whistle when I ask for UNF, but they have always come up with the goods, so far!

Have a look at

Andy Challenor is an occasional poster here and ran, and maybe still runs a TR.

Very nice guy to deal with, give him a call if you have any questions about what to use where.

Usual disclaimer, just a vary happy customer

Or try these guys, fast efficient service, and all from your computer.

http://www.namrick.co.uk/

Namrick supplied all of the fixings used on my total rebuild; the fixings were supplied over several orders, some years apart. They have been around some considerable time & there is not much they don't stock or can't get hold of; I never had any problems with them & can confirm service was always fast & efficient.

Also, Quality Suppliers do mixed UNF packs, I bought some there last week. They don't have a website ( ) but they are a quality supplier.

They have s/s and high tensile.

Its not anyone I know although operations like this can hide out for years down here and never be seen operating on the net. A couple of months ago I came across a supplier similar to "Frost" that has been operating about ten miles away for years and I didnt know they were there either!

Sorry; I just find this amusing since here in the US, we are awash with UNC and UNF available at the local hardware store in Stainless, galavanized, grade 8, grade 5, and plain ole' nickle plate cheap asian produced stuff. Now I will be more than happy to trade any UNF stuff with you guys for BSP, BSPF, Conical etc. that is totally unavaliable without special order over here.

Yes its ok for you lot as you wouldnt have anything to do with metric unfortunately over here successive governments have just rolled over and given in to the EU and metrication has crept in everywhere to such an extent that you can no longer go to your local hardware store and buy anything other than metric nuts and bolts. When questioned all you get as a reply is "oh theres no call for it now." So much so that a local hardware dealers about 5 years ago skipped all of their old stock UNF/UNC/Whitworth /BSF nuts and bolts. Unfortunately I only found out afterwards otherwise I would have bought the lot!

Stuart, I must just be lucky: We have a local store - AHC Camberley Ltd - who have supplied almost everything I have needed, hex head bolts & screws, nuts, washers, cap head and CSK head allen screws etc etc all in UNF/UNC in a choice of materials and finishes. I have had to cut some down to get the exact length but that's all.

I haven't got round to high tensile stuff yet but I'm sure they will be able to supply.

Cheers

Had to look up what a Thackery washer was.

Found two types, one just a 'double' spring washer, the other with a step in the middle part between the two ends. Any comments about which is superior, or does it depend on the application?

John its the double spring type that is usual on TRs used primarily on 4a sliding boot props and 4/5/6 bonnet props.

Hello all,

it is well worth checking with your local engineering merchant. Mine stocks imperial and metric fasteners and also useful for the bsp fittings that you may also need.

I would, however, query the reason for using stainless fasteners on an engine? I would also suggest that they are not used anywhere hot as they tend to seize quite easily.

Just returned from Wheels Day, dearth of TRs.

This chap was there, very keen prices, 330-piece packs of mixed UNF s/s (incl washers) £24 at the show, and pretty well every type of fastening you could want, including nice wide spring washers, also full width s/s worm-drive for water hose @ 70p, and 2" s/s exhaust clamps at £5.

I see he was at Race Retro.
