Ducting (& sizes) for piping from plenum to K & N filter

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have just purchase a nice stainless steel Radiator surround to put onto my six. Before I do this I need to pruchase some ducting that has the circumference that it will either fit in or over the circumference of the plenum chamber and will then fit inside the K & N Filter so that the K & N can be in almost the position of the original TR6 air filter. Also whilst I need the ducting flexible it will also need flat (non correguated ends) for facing up to the plenum and filter. Any body got the circumference measurments I am after ? Any body done the same thing ? / Know of any suitable ducting pipe ?

Many Thanks

Jeremy

We may be a little baffled as to what you are trying to achieve and why the original ducting is not suitable (other than its rather 'budget' appearance).

Given that the standard ducting fits over the plenum and over the filter housing, if you seek ducting to fit in the filter, and over the plenum (not sure what is meant by 'facing up to') perhaps you would need a straight spigot that would fit in the filter housing and inside the ducting.

For stainless ducting you might do worse than browse the Custom Car community, someone like Pop Browns might be able to direct you. However, it would absorb heat from the engine which would heat the incoming air and reduce the weight of the intake charge, detrimentally from the viewpoint of performance and perhaps summer running.

If someone has gone to the trouble of making a stainless rad surround - assuming not a one-off - might they already have trodden this path?

Intrigued to hear more.

Hmmm. I have a K&N element in the original housing, but I guess you're talking about something different. As for diameter of the plenum, isn't it the same OD as the ID of flexible air-conditioning trunking - you know, the aluminised corrugated stuff? That should look OK with your snazzy radiator surround. And the original ducting was corrugated along its whole length, AFIK (mine is, anyway).

John

the heater air distribution pipe from a scrap mondeo or escort will do the trick the plenim is 76mm diameter i believe car builder solutions do sell flexible ducting however ours came from a mk 4 escort (ford)

76mm My Aunt Sally! It's three INCHES across!

And get on down to your local B&Q or other bodge-it-all store for some extractor fan ducting.

Cheap as chips, nice glossy white finish and just the right size!

(I know its not a TR and the plenum's upside down)

Don't know what plenum you guys have on your cars, but the one on mine measures 83mm or 3 1/4 inches OD. And yes John, I do use a 15mm spanner and 19/32 spanner interchangeably with careless disregard to the feelings of my English classic and my own heritage :)

Cheers,

John
