Hi I've seen a solid state regulator with a fixed output of 8 amps could anyone out there tell me if this would be suitable for a Tr3?

Cheers Mark

For doing what Mark ? Is this a dynamo regulator?   If so the answer is no - not enough amps.  You need 22A for the C40 dynamo, to be any use.

(The rating is the maximum the dynamo will be able to produce, so it is up to...not a fixed value)

Oh bugga.

Thanks Rob, yes it is for a dynamo regulator, guy has it on eBay at the moment. I'd best scuttle over to eBay and see if he'll be kind enough to let me off the hook for my "offer"

That'll teach me to ask for advice before I plunge in rather than after.

I'm going to take my own advice now and ask the question first.

The following eBay regulator listed as item No. 114721131927 is described as

 Electronic Assisted Dynamo -ve E 12V Regulator RB106 37066 130052 Screw Terminal

Or should I stick with the mechanical regulator?

There isn't much detail in that ad but I think that is a standard electro-mechanical regulator which has had a power transistor fitted to do the switching as a modification, to overcome burning of the mechanical contacts.  It is not a full-blown electronic regulator.

It doesn't say whether it is a genuine Lucas item or an aftermarket one - probably the latter in which case it's a bit of an unknown quantity.  Its is certainly cheaper than an electronic conversion though like these which are known to be OK:

Have you got a problem with your present regulator?

Hi Rob glad you're not tucked up in bed.

To be honest my present regulator is an unknown quantity as I've spent the last four years turning a large amount of parts into a Tr3.

It's more a case of I've been doing too much reading and am thinking (bad idea) that the mechanical regulators may be a weak link. I don't wish to move to an alternator, in part because I had a rebuilt dynamo included in the bits n pieces that came with the car.

I actually have a couple of original regulators so was considering seeing if one or the other was working ok but my eye was caught by the ones I mentioned on E bay.

Hi Bob I've used one of their conversions on an Austin 8 and it's done a sterling job. I may well end up taking this route again but the price of the e bay ones caught my eye.

Are the mechanical ones dire or have I just been reading all the bad news out there on the web?

If the ones you have are genuine Lucas they ought to be OK Mark as long as no-one has been fiddling with them.  The aftermarket repro ones have a bit of a bad name as some are made from shoddy materials and wear out quickly.

It's a toss-up whether its worth getting old Lucas ones refurbished though as the decent electronic ones are fine and probably cost less. As another option you can buy just the electronic modules (DVR3) to fit in the cases you have:

Hi Rob, they are original Lucas and seem to be in decent nick. By this I mean they're quite pretty. Not sure how much relevance that has to function

Thanks for the link, food for thought.

I spent years trying to make the RB106 work well. I bought a conversion which fitted in th existing case but it could not cope with with the lights ,heater, and mobile phone charger because it was too low amps.

I upgraded to one full new unit ADR 106 22 amps from Classic Dynamo and Regulators.  Use the link supplied by Lebro on this forum. It has made a huge difference and I wish that I had done it earlier. It did cost a bit but it was well worth it and altered the car for me.

Go for it,

Richard & B

Hi Richard it does look the sensible option especially as I'd like to take the car on a European road trip next year.  Trouble is I don't tend to pair "sensible" with "Tr" ;)
