Has anyone had a refurbed wiper motor as an exchange from moss?

I swapped mine for a refurbed one at stoneleigh and it doesn't work. But the 3 wires that come out of it have no colour coding to match up to the wiring loom. Infact i am not sure what refurbed means anymore.

Has anyone had the same experience?

These motors are useless at the best of time.  Send it back and get your money back

Consider fitting a 14W TR6 motor - they actually work.

To see your colours Remove the back plate and look inside - you should be able to so sheathing that is not sun bleached.

Trying to keep it original but i did think about TR6 motor. i will have a look later.

UPDATE - so i have tested the new motor on a battery and it DOES work, fast speed is fine but slow speed turns so slowly that it wouldn't turn the wipers at all!

Thanks for the heads up Roger - noted now.

At least i have one speed - fast. but i paid to have a workable two speed motor so another call to moss.

And life goes on!

The slow speed is achieved by adding a 10 Ohm resistance wire in series with the field winding.

If this wire burns out (and they do, quite easily)   then the slow will die.

Should the wire change its resistance then the speed may well change.

With the back plate off you should be able to see the wire - with a test meter check the value of the resistance.

A fixed 10 Ohm  5Watt resistor can be put in place.

PS - this resistance reduces the torque of the motor.   It really is quite useless.

Not quite Roger - it's the fast speed that is obtained by weakening the field.

"Eclem"- to get slow speed you MUST connect both 'slow' and 'fast' wires to earth at the same time. If you connect just the slow wire the resistance Roger mentions is put in series with the armature which is what eventually burns it out and is why the motor hardly runs. ( If it was still going round you probably haven't burnt the wire out yet. I guess you didn't have the motor body earthed either during your test , else the self-park wiper would have operated, making the speed go up and down. ).

Yes i had the motor earthed but not the two slow and fast wires together. that must be in the switch

Rob,  So indeed if you have slow and fast speed together then it does indeed turn at a slow speed the take away the slow speed and it works at faster speed i can get it to work off a battery but not on a switch i have a 3 connector switch but i can't get the slow and fast speed to connect at the same time. any suggestions?  Cheers Clem

Sounds like you may have the wrong switch I'm afraid or else it is defective.  The one for the DR3a motor is special and if that motor was original to your car your switch ought to be the right sort.  The standard after-market switches sold for two-speed wipers don't work the right way and neither does the TR6 switch.

Do you know the type number of what you have?

Hi Clem

the switch for this motor is a bit special. It is the same switching as the TR4A but a different body.  BHA4578

TR4A switch  BHA4578   Here

TR5  wiper switch ~81, 82, 83   Here

The above will work but not an ordinary switch

Hi Clem,

if it is of any use the BHA4578 (pull switch) is also available  as a toggle switch  BHA4786  (MGB wiper swiych)

Roger.

The Clear Hooters 3 terminal wiper switch for TR5 is pretty much unique.   I think It was also used on contemporary GT6 mk 2

I have never found a Lucas replacement switch with 3 terminals with the  same internal connections as the TR5/250 rocker switch does.   The US recall on Triumph wiper switches only offered the 4 terminal Lucas item, suitable for TR6 and the later 14w motor.

There is/was a wiring diagram floating about that describes how to use a TR6 switch with 4 terminals with the 3 wire wiper motor in a TR5/250.    Someone may have it and post

That was me Peter - you need the TR6 switch and a high current diode.  These days I would use a big schottky diode (20SQ080) rather than the one shown.

This shows it for a negative-earth system.

Thank you.

A lot more elegant and understandable than the one I found

Before you do, see my later edit re the type of diode.  The original will work OK but a Schottky has lower voltage drop so is better.

Hi Rob thanks for the info, yes the postal  prices are stupid now since BREXIT. Then there will be a custom charge at this end i have to pay or they take the package away.  I no longer get stuff sent from the UK i wait until i am over visiting family and pick it up to bring back its like being in third world country now, but hey ho my choice.

Once i have it all fitted and working i will post on here, thanks.

Normally Amazon take care of it he importation documentation and TVA when you buy through them, that has been my experience so no extra charges for customs, as you say buying from some Uk suppliers is a pain with the extravagant postage charges and extra customs clearance fees

Hi All so success I have fitted TR6 switch as suggested with the diode and i have two speeds. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread. In the end it was very simple to do with the knowledge. I have another TR5 to do and a friend who has a TR5 with a similar problem who i can now sort out.

Many thanks again everyone I am a very, very happy smiley person!

Clem
