Richardtr3a Posted March 27 Report Share Posted March 27 Last year I sent my steering column to a special engineering business. They were recommended as a high quality company. The column was overhauled at some cost and now has instructions not to alter the adjustment. It has taken over nine months to fit it in the TR. Luckily I had a reasonable one in the car for the last ten years It works well while driving but the steering wheel is not quite horizontal, which is probably me and a friend fitting issue. But when parking or trying a three point turn the steering is much too firm. I have tried a few miles now and it is not improving. The overhaul company do not have a garage so I can not take it to Surrey. The one year guarantee has almost run out and they are not helping. Is there a way to improve the box by using the rocker shaft adjusting bolt and locknut. The company have confirmed that any adjustment will invalidate the guarantee. I am having trouble getting to the company and their specialist is away until two days after easter. I am not confident in their guarantee anyway. Can any one offer advice or better still come round to my house on a sunny afternoon and sort it out, please ? Richard & B Quote Link to post Share on other sites
BlueTR3A-5EKT Posted March 27 Report Share Posted March 27 Hi Richard. Not daft questions but a sensible start. Is the thing filled to the filler hole in the column with the correct oil? If you only fill through the top cover screwed plug the upper bearing that supports the worm and shaft may be dry. Have you greased/oiled the front suspension trunions and all steering joints? Lebro Posted March 27 Report Share Posted March 27 If the steering has only got heavier since fitting the new box, then the rest of the steering system is probably ok, to check if the box is too tight jack the front of the car up, so the wheels are of the ground, then try the steering, if it is still heavy then check if it is only heavy in the straight ahaed position, or if fully left, or full right etc. there should not be any "tight spots". if there are then small adjustments to the rocker height setting screw may be needed. Are you sure it is heavier than before, with no other changes (tyres etc) are the tyre pressures ok. Bob Quote Link to post Share on other sites
iain Posted March 28 Report Share Posted March 28 Are you absolutely sure that the column has been refitted without any deflection? That is often caused by the bracket under the dash putting left or right tension on the column and or the lower bolts being tightened when the column at the wheel end is too high or too low. I had a similar issue and slackened everything off including the lower box mountings to let the column run straight then very carefully adjusted the dash bracket to suit, retightened everything ……..stiffness solved.
