Graham P
Hi Everyone, I've recently purchased a TR6 CP150 (not matching numbers, and not a show queen!) I have found the information from your forum extremely useful so far. When I bought it it was running pretty rough, having got it back to my workshop and started to go through things it's a tribute to the design that it ran at all!! It had a reconditioned metering unit, what looks like a reconditioned Lucas pump, new fuel tank, new injector hoses (braided - maybe not so great from what I read?) apart from various other bits. It was missing badly. So I started at the begining. Points were set at about .005", timing 4 deg AFTER TDC, injectors 5 and 2 plumbed in wrong way round, and metering unit timed incorrectly, other than that it was fine!!! So I've set everything correctly now and balanced the throttle bodies and what a surprise, it now runs considerably better! For all the bad PR they get I reckon they must be a pretty forgiving engine! It would benefit from the the throttle bodies being refurbed as the wear in the linkage side on each body is definitely allowing air in but that will have to wait until a bit later. Thanks to all the people who have shared their knowledge on this site and made my task much easier. Regards Graham
RogerH
Well done Graham, Keep up the good work. Roger
JohnG
Balancing your butterflys is in itself, a bit of a bugger, so well fone you. Clive Manvers took a day and a half to do mine and his guys were experts, but, having had Clive do it, it started and ran almost perfectly from then on.
Mike C
Were the injectors rebuilt and recalibrated ? I found rebuilding and recalibrating the MU and injectors to suit my particular engine (2.7L, TR5 cam) absolutely transformed it.
Mk2 Chopper
Welcome to TR6 ownership. It sounds like you've learnt a lot already from here, it really is an invaluable resource. The metering unit will still work 180 degrees out, you've done well to tackle all these jobs. I like a car that needs a few things doing to take it up a level, you get to know the car and it becomes your own that way. Gareth
Paul Hill
Hi Graham welcome to TR6 ownership. I see you are Staffordshire same here Cannock
nickw71
Welcome to TR ownership Graham. I have had my CP 150 TR6 for 15 years and it has been both deeply rewarding and frustrating in equal measure. They fantastic looking cars IMO, full of character, British car idiosyncrasies (being polite) and that 6 cylinder puts a smile on your face and makes you glad you're not driving an MG I've dipped in and out of this forum as family and work pressures have put the TR on the back burner but whenever I have needed help and advice it has been second to none. It's a proper community of (generally!) liked minded souls who never shy from giving you the benefit of their experience or tell you if you're going wrong. As stated above, balanced throttle butterflies make a huge difference to engine performance and idling smoothness. In terms of spare parts and advice for the LUCAS injection system, there are a few specialists out there but I couldn't recommend Martin Giles (FredMillTurn) highly enough. Martin has made it his mission to understand the system and offer remanufactured spares. https://fredmillturnparts.com/ Good luck Nick
Graham P
Thank you for all your comments and help, I've got a bit of spare time at work at the moment so I'm trying to get it into reasonable useable order fairly quickly and then hopefully I'll keep it as a running project. I know what happens once you start stripping down and getting carried away doing everything!! Graham
