Tick borne encephalitis

TRers who enjoy country walks might like to know there is a tick-borne  encephalitis virus spreading in UK.

+1  Deet does a good job, ticks don't like the smell OR the taste so smothering your legs above socks up to your shorts in it helps.

Even better jeans tucked into long socks and some Deet sprayed onto the jeans sparingly doesn't cause them to run and keeps the blighters off. Also, take your socks off carefully in case they are in the weave (they aren't that big when not bloated with blood, about pin head size) and shake outdoors.

It's not just on country walks - ticks are also found in domestic gardens, since the hosts can be small rodents.

Looks like only a handful of cases of TBE in UK, however a much more prevalent risk from ticks is Lyme disease - watch out for a circular, oval or bullseye-shaped skin rash which can appear up to a couple of months later. I gather from a friend who had it that untreated Lyme can be very nasty.
