Overdrive solenoid

Recommended Posts

I was going to adjust my overdrive valve as there appears to be a great deal of play in the system and although the solenoid clicks it does not engage the overdrive. I have read the appropriate section in the workshop manual but do not understand the procedure. The manual show the solenoid and operating lever and list all the parts. However the scrip talks about a setting lever which has to be pegged to the casting (there is an inset drawing).  Is the setting lever a separate "tool" as it is not listed as one of the parts in the photos or is it another name for the operating lever?.

You’ll find the operating lever at the opposite side to the solenoid.

It has a 3/16 hole in the end

there is a similar hole in the body of the overdrive and the procedure is that you lock these two holes in line with a 3/16 drill bit and then tighten the other end.

In practice these days as the holes can have oval used slightly you need to ‘Lean’on the lever against the drill bit to get operation

Hi Phil,

Nothing special needed here, the setting lever is on the opposite side of the overdrive to the solenoid (assuming an A type OD), for the peg you can use the shank of a 3/16" drill bit, this goes through the setting lever and into a small hole in the casting. Slacken off the solenoid lever pinch bolt and move the setting lever into position, tighten up the bolt and the job's done. You can vary the way the OD operates by moving the final position very slightly, forward of the position and the OD will come in more vigorously, slightly retarded and the operation will be gentle.

Make sure the solenoid is powered when you make this adjustment

Yup, that's an important one...
