openroad
Hi All, wondered if someone could tell me what this Engine Plaque means on a four Cylinder TR Engine. Factory recon possibly ? Now I have seen the picture blown up, I see Exchange Unit, Cheers Conrad Edited July 7, 2020 by openroad
Lebro
This is mine, yes factory reconditioned engine. mine is marked "FRE" don't know what the "E" means, nor the "HP" on mine & the "LM" on yours. Bob.
stuart
FRE is Factory Reconditioned Engine. I think the HP or LM is an identifier for bearing source. Stuart.
Lebro
Agreed on FRE, but the photo above shows "FR" why the difference ? Bob
Charlie D
Looks a bit like the bloke who did it ran out of space.

Graham
I've got an engine that has one of the letters of the engine number stamped sideways, guessing it must have been done on a Friday afternoon after a looooong lunch Hic
openroad
Thankyou for the input lads.....so is the TSA number the original engine number, and does it denote a tr2/3 Engine.? This isn't in a car , so it's a schoolday for me. Also did alot of engines go back to the Factory for recon, rather than done by the local engineer. ? Cheers Conrad. stuart
Have a look at the distributor side of the block where the curve of the casting accommodates the cam, if there is bolt heads along that line (above the oil gallery ones) then its a TR3 on engine as TR2 ones didnt have cam bearings (unless in the factory recon they were fitted.) Judging by the numbering being later than Bobs I would say its a TR3 on. FWIW The factory did rebuild quite a lot of engines in the early days when there was a lot being raced and rallied. Stuart. Charlie D
The answer to the FRE/FR question. "Wolfie Smith" made the plate. (Jump to 1.20 if you are inpatient.)
