Ticking Rev Counter TR5

Recommended Posts

I've done a quick search on the forum regarding this, but can't find any comments.

I've got a strange intermittent ticking noise from the Rev Counter when the engine is at low revs, it doesn't do it all the time and is worse when idling.

I've changed the Cable for a new one and routed it the best I can so its got no kinks or sharp bends

I'm thinking the Tachometer may need a rebuild.

The strange thing is, I was taken for a test ride in another TR5 last year and it had the same ticking noise, weird or what.

Any idea's?

The ticking can also sometimes be the non return valve on the servo!

Correct, simple fault could be the rev counter is running dry if so remove and put a smear of butter where the cable attaches to the unit.

Butter! Wouldn't some sort of Grease be better?

If I it is the Servo valve and I apply the brakes will it stop the ticking?

I've the same problem with my 4A, original cable broke, replaced with Moss one, ticking started & needle fluctuating between 800 & 1200 revs approx on tickover. It's as tho' something is dry/sticking &, like you not sure what to do.

Try it and see.

Broken single strand of wire on the cable "flicking" against something, at higher revs the cable compresses tighter and holds the strand and also of course the higher revs are noisier.
