Rossi78
My name is Anthony Rossi. I live in north Georgia, just south of Chattanooga Tennessee. I joined this forum last year and posted about how I had inherited my father british car collection, along with what I already had. I posted pictures of his near completed TR250. I also spoke about how I plan to get into vending this year to clear some things out, but not to get rid of the TR250 or things I don't have two of. I am really hoping that I can post on here from time to time for advice and to borrow your knowledge. My father was the british car master mechanic and vender, John Rossi. Today I was hoping someone could tell me the value of my tr6 rebuilt transmission. I have two and somebody made me an offer on one. Said $800 if not rebuilt, $1400 if rebuilt. Both of mine are rebuilt. One he wrote on a tag, the other has the October 2000 date written on the inside. I was satisfied with that offer. Also, could somebody please help me identify this head? I have a rebuilt TR6 engine and the 250 has a rebuilt motor, so i'm not sure if maybe it came from one of those so I'm not sure if I can sell it. If you could tell me a fair value that would be great. Thanks for the help! Anthony
peejay4A
Hi Anthony I can't help with your questions but I couldn't help noticing that the gearbox/overdrive is missing the inhibit switch(es) on the top cover.
Rossi78
The transmission in the picture is out of my 74 tr6. Those parts are most likely in a box. that car has the rebuilt engine and tranny, but the car is stripped down to the body with doors, fender, hood removed. My father wanted to get it chemically dipped and restore it from the ground up. everything else to it is in boxes. It's somebodies dream project, but i'm thinking about selling that package. It's too over my head, and I would like to put that money into my tr250
Peter Cobbold
Anthony, Without the correct inhibit switches on the gear selector you will be able to engage overdrive in reverse gear - the overdrive will be killed. The head can be identified from any numbers on it - but the photos dont show. Peter
Rossi78
I'm betting those switches are in a box. My identical rebuilt transmission that I plan to sell to the buyer has all of those attached. The numbers on the head that pictured is; 516323 Thanks for the knowledge! Bodiam
Hi, Anthony, Chris Witor's chart shows that head as a TR250. If you go to Chris's website, click on 'Technical' and there you will see his head chart, which hopefully will tell you what you want to know. Good luck! John
peejay4A
The switches might be in a box but you'll need to drill the holes in the top cover first.
Rossi78
I see what you all mean now about the switches. in the pictures below i placed my other transmission next to it and i understand now. The one without the switch is also the one pictured with the tag of my fathers work. I looked around uickly and could not locate that peice. That transmission goes with the rebuilt engine pictured. I wonder why he rebuilt it the way he did without the switch that you all noticed? I'm sure he had some sort of reason... That is great that you all noticed something that i was not even speaking of. I have so much parts stuff here in my shop boxes that I have no clue what it may be or be to. I've got it all somewhat organized into MGB, TR6/
john.r.davies
A quick Google shows me that a TR250 has three switches (reverse,O/d inhibitor and ???) on the top where the cast plugs are, while a TR6 has two on the side, where there is just one on the right hand side of the other box. I think you need more ID marks to distinguish them than just the switches. John
Rossi78
Sorry for the lack of details on the transmission marking. I took some better pictures and wrote down the markings. let me know if I missed anything Anthony not pictured directly; both transmission also have these markings S6 7388-2-L 115314 V3300 Transmission I Tranny# CC 104718 OD# 28/11573/002098 ?# 306812 WYF/2 E336 ?# E5 Transmission II Tranny# CC 105894 (also) D30E 74 OD# 25/115838/007256 ?# V2947 88306812-5 SM ?# E4/6 8 Edited March 25, 2016 by Rossi78
john.r.davies
See https://club.triumph.org.uk/prefix1.htmfor a list of all TR, and other Triumph, engine and gearbox prefixes. CD TR250, TR6 Pi and some with carbs, some of the latter were CC and CF. Those apply to the stamped numbers, which were unique to each unit. The cast in numbers were the casting IDs and were shared by many units John Edited March 25, 2016 by john.r.davies
peejay4A
They are both J type over drives and would have had overdrive on 3/4 only. One of my posts somewhere on the forum has a picture of the switch positions and also shows where the vent hole has to be drilled on the top cover because the J type O/D has no breather on it. If you don't have the hole your box will leak. Guaranteed. As your top cover wasn't from an overdrive box the vent hole might not be there.
