saggy
Hello all, I have what I think (hope) are a good set of very little used 5 wire wheels to go on the car. (Well one is to go in the boot of course!) However, I hate vibration on a car and would first like to get them checked for radial and axial 'dial out' then possibly repainting as they are like 5 shades of grey at the moment. Question 1. who in the south/south west or midlands would be able to check and true them. 2. what was the correct silver paint for 1966 Many thanks.
RogerH
There is 'Phil the Wheel' in Ickenham - West London. If you google him you will get the details. I've used him and he is good - ex-tool maker and long established wheel maker. He is semi-retired now. Roger
TriumphV8
Always a good idea to look at the wire wheels, I do that once a year and I do not like vibrations from the wheels, too. I found out two things that might be of interest for you: The mounting flanges at our car influence that quite a lot as the adaptors itself are not fully true. Also the centering by the bolts is not perfect. If you found a perfect match it would be a good idea to mark those three components in their best position. Balancing at the car is essential to get a perfect result and if you have a real specialist he can do a lot by matching all the parts together during that job. So a very little "true out" can be used to compensate other parts and only just removing a wire wheel and put it back can easily generate a need for a balancing weight of 15grams. So I remove the wheels sometimes for better cleaning because you can look deep into the wheel through the spokes but always use my balancing equipment to rebalance at the car after that and that is necessary if you want to really avoid those vibrations. The equipment can be bought cheap in these days because tire shops do not use it any more due to 4WD or PSM or ASR. http://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/reifenwuchtmaschine-hofmann-wuchtgeraet-finishbalancer/366526747-223-6338
saggy
Hi Roger, yes thanks for that - I think 'phil' has cropped up before either on here or somewhere in the rarely visited crannies of my cranium. (I have lots of those) Andreas - I think you have a good understanding of my real concerns so thank you for your thoughts. There is little point in having a well balanced wheel/tyre if the mounting face has issues, or the centering is off. So I do need someone with the capability to check these points as well as the wheel otherwise any checks on just the wheels will be a waste of someone's time and my money. For the same reason I would like the rear hubs/brake drums to be checked as I expect these are a source of unnecessary vibration as well. I'll get 'googling' and ask some questions. riverstar
I would also recommend Phil Halloween in Ickenham he is worth a visit if only to see his workshop. The last time I was there he was training a young lad in the art of wheel making.

It is possible to balance the rear wheels at the car, too. In that case also the imbalance of the drive shafts is considered.
