sperry14
Evening all. Just starting to think about some of the jobs iam planning over the autumn / winter .... One of which will be re spraying my Surrey top fibre glass centre section ( the part between the windscreen and Surrey back light ) it came with the car and needs a tidy up . Iam just going to use conventional aerosol cans , I have had some made up with the cars body colour, I have rubbed it down , it's ready to be painted , do I need to use any sort of special primer ? Before hand on this substrate ?
Motorsport Mickey
Sorry, not ignoring you just never done a "rattle can" spray on a fibreglass panel and so not sure what to recommend. Stuart (resident body expert) normally recommends Bondarust Primer but whether that remains the same for fibreglass only he can say. Mick Richards
RogerH
Have you googled it. I had a quick look yesterday and in general a 2K primer was being used - not sure if this is available in aerosol. Roger
BrianC
Probably worth asking at a boatyard or chandlers.
stuart
2K primer would be probably the best though a plastic primer as used for bumpers would work though only any good if you have still got a good gel coat finish. Cellulose primer will work but you would need to leave a long time between coats as it will sink heavily. If its a poor surface i.e. has been heavily blocked off or in the case of the original sidescreen car fibre hardtop that had a lot of pinholes in the gel then you could use a spraying filler but that must only be done in very dry conditions and needs to be flatted off and primed and overpainted fairly rapidly. jerrytr5
Give it a good key by rubbing down with 360 wet 'n dry then a couple of coats of any auto hi-build primer. Sometimes micro blisters or air bubbles are present in the gel which will need filling. Rub down with 600 and proceed as normal. Jerry.
