accelerator oddness

Recommended Posts

my accelerator is really heavy and a bit notchy, makes feathering a bit awkward. Not a massive problem but could I think be improved. So I had a look. I seem to have lots of springs doing different things

this is my spring arrangement. Each throttle body has a return hair spring, the accelerator cable arm has one big spring underneath and two smaller ones pulling up. It all works fine and the revs drop to a nice smooth 800rpm at idle, or at least they did..

In an attempt to lighten the pedal I removed the two upwards pulling springs and everything worked perfectly until the engine got really warm after about 20 miles. Gradually the idle speed got higher and higher to about 1800rpm. popped the springs back on and idle back to normal.

investigating tonight and it seems that without the upwards springs the butterflies don't close all the way and with them they do.

So after my longwinded description I guess I'd like to know if this is correct and is it possible to get the correct closing with a lighter pedal?

72, PI, CP engine.

Thanks

Gary

Gary, have you checked the linkage, wear in the bushes is common and the central bush can't easily be replaced. Also the pedal bushes may be worn, worth checking. Lastly here the linkage is bolted to the inlet manifolds may need a bit of fettling to ease he movement of the shaft.

On my CP I only have one spring where you have the 2, and the not the one underneath to the manifold.

I have put 3 new shaft bushes in recently and also changed to the ball jointed links to the butterfly shaft, works much better now, just a but tricky setting up each set though, but well worth it, at least they now all open together now!

Hi. Thanks for the above. Interested in the ball joint links but only from a position of eliminating play in the system. I should have mentioned that with no springs fitted everything moves freely with no notchiness to play in the bushes. With just the bottom spring fitted the return to idle position works smoothly except for about the last 0,5mm which leaves the butterflies very slightly open with the three springs the butterflies close fully. The throttle bodies are balanced with an airflow meter

Thanks

Gary

From what I can see the bottom spring is an extra and looks like the spring for the return of the choke cable. I'd remove it and see how she fares. I have found that I need 2 springs on the upper part of the linkage, when I only had 1 the return to idle when accelerating hard was too slow, ie floor throttle back off to change gear but revs not at idle as clutch engaged so I added a spring as your setup, now fine.

For years I put up with a very light throttle pedal on my CP car, until I simply replaced it with a much stronger one and made it instantly easier to drive in traffic.

I'm going to try a couple of things from the above suggestions

first I'm going to try using only the upper springs

second I'm going to try changing the linkages to double ball joints. Has anyone tried making their own as £120 for 6 ball joints and some studding seems a bit excessive when bought as a kit. why can't I make my own, parts cost seems under £25. If I do what size ball joins are used? any ideas??

thanks in advance

Gary

edit;- just found another ball joint kit from Moss at just under £50, anyone have experience of this kit?

thanks again

Hi Gary

I have fitted the Moss kit and they work well and are fairly easy to fit & set up.

Moss kit bought. Ordered bushes for shaft too. How on earth does the centre one fit?

Hi Gary, I think I cut one side of the centre bush and fed it in.

The old one was cut and very worn still hard to remove. All cleaned and painted ready for battle tomorrow. New linkages in the post and bushes ready to fit, what could possibly go wrong!,,

Stay positive Gary it will be fine.

Yeehaaa. They're in and balanced. Getting them I was relatively easy but not as easy to blance as I expected

Done and road tested

Much lighter throttle and nice steady idle. 5 hours well spent in the end

Thanks, all

Gary

Well done Gary, now you can drive it like you stole it. ;)
