AlanG
Some advice please. Were there any differences between J Type o/d units fitted to 2000/2500 saloons and TR6? Are they interchangeable? Thanks Alan.
Steves_TR6
In the absence of an expert reply..... I believe they have different ratios?
TriumphV8
Just managed to fit a J-Type from Volvo to TR6, before that I fitted a P-Type to TR6, from Volvo, too. The great advantage is that those overdrives in Germany are pretty fresh and cheap and easy availiable, cost below 80GBP! Makes sense just to store them for the solenoid as a spare! Just did some work on the 2500 saloon OD with saloon gearbox and completed with "normal" TR6 parts from Rimmer. Seems to be that these 3 are all the same in the relevant parts (main shaft) and the planet gears inside nobody would swap as it does not play a role if there would be a slight different ratio. P-Type has a different pressure valve.
graeme
Alan, They are interchangeable, but the saloon O/D will need the TR6 output drive flange and speedo drive or the speedo will need recalibration. The saloon pressure valve is also different to the TR6 but seems to work OK. There are two ratio for saloon boxes, mostly 25% (same as TR6) but some are 28% which is good for economical cruising but third O/D is very close to fourth so not so good for performance driving. The reduction ratio is easily identified from the serial # which will start with the ratio eg. 25/***** or 28/*****. Cheers Graeme
