Vibration from Rear of Car

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

Would like to Introduce myself, Andy from Cambridge, this is my first post and to be honest i am addicted to reading the posts and used these to resolve many issues over the last 2 years of ownership.

I need your help, 1975 CR model uk registered original PI Car with overdrive.

My car seems to have a vibration feel & noise from rear of car starting at around 40mph, on reading previous posts i have read first stage is to swap front & rear wheel over which i have completed today which didn't resolve the problem. I therefore feel confident to say it does not appear to be wheel balancing or tyre condition causing the issue.

The vibration is there with Overdrive engaged & not engaged and does not seem to go away with speed increased, certainly still there at 60mph.

Thank you in advance for your help

Thanks for prompt response, got to be honest i haven't tried feeling floorpan would that would that indicate prop shaft UJ ?

Another point to note my Diff leaks oil from Pinion Seal, i have topped it up using oil pump twice (each year) but never felt like it was totally dry when i have topped up as not even one pump gets the level up.

Indeed it would and may also count for the failure of your diff seal :(

Andy, welcome to the fray. It does appear to be prop shaft, although in my experience the drive shaft UJs fail much more frequently, and knock on drive take-up.

Diff oil seal - join the club. II try to park facing uphill, on the basis that I have a self-purging diff that always has fresh oil in it. Aka laziness.

I need to ask a question, would i be able to feel noticeable play in the UJ that makes it obvious cause of issue. also how big of a job is this for home mechanic.

e.g. does the exhaust need to come off to get at Prop Shaft

Hi All

Looking for some further advise please, following on from this topic i have completed the following :-

1. Last weekend Drive shafts removed and all 4 UJs & 2 spines checked for play, all look good, re greased and re assembled.

2. This weekend Propshaft 2 UJ's checked and splines seams fine, Disconnected UJ between diff and prop. Differential seems to be culprit as knocking slack sound holding prop and rotating driven wheels.

In summary Seems to me to be excessive backlash between gears in diff !

Can anybody advise best option for either refurbishment or replacement diff (recon etc) Cambridge area

I am contemplating doing the job myself as doesn't look to difficult one rear of car raised safely

Your thoughts please would be appreciated.

Yes diff removal is a DIY job. Getting it back can be a hassle as there's no way it can be lifted by hand. It topples off a trolley jack so best solution is to make a cradle:

Wouldn't recommend rebuilding the Diff yourself...it's a very specialist job setting up the mesh!

Back in the mid 70's I stripped 2.5 teeth off my Crown wheel after too many competition starts!

A mates local garage took on the rebuild and asked me..."Do you want Backlash or Whine?"...Seems it's that tricky...I settled for Whine (not Wine) I soon got fed-up with that, and exchanged it for a new unit.

Last week, I got a local garage to change the oil as it had never ever been changed, that's when we discovered the Diff doesn't have a drain plug! So had to resort to sucking it out the filler hole instead.

On the cradle I knocked one up out of some remnants of wood very easily.

It doesn't need to last long just for idle some stability whilst you trolley jack the dif into place.

My car has a rear anti roll bar, which gets in the way as doe the exhaust :-)

Guys

Thanks for all your help, i am learning fast

Today i have contacted some suppliers for costs of refurbished diffs and costs to refurb my own. There is a clear difference between some suppliers offering refurbishment with "New Crown wheel & Pinion" & those that are simply "Refurbished CW & P."

What would you guys recommend as best option

refurbish my own unit or buy refurbished unit, notice there is a guy on eBay offering TR 6 diff refurbishment

So many choices would appreciate some advice on recommended suppliers

Thanks again
