Chris59 Posted January 20, 2014 Report Share Posted January 20, 2014 Hello guys, Not really a TR, but the oil filter looks to be the same, and the filter bowl is (and chassis, albeit different, is similar on many points !): I would like to re-locate the oil filter on a Daimler Dart, the one with the small 2L5 V8 engine. This kind of modification could be of some interest for some "wet liners" TR owner, who knows ? I must explain why I want to relocate the filter : on Darts, due to the height of the filter bowl, the right hand exhaust down pipe sit very low (as is the left one, to be symetrical ?), about 3 to 4 cms under the chassis lowest point. Hence they often touch the tarmac, with the "benefit" of reshaping the pipes and breaking the exhaust manifolds.... So, I would like to remove the filter and his bowl, bolt an adaptator to the filter housing (this housing is bolted, as on any wet liner TR, to the engine block), and, with a pair of flexible hoses, use a modern cartridge filter + its new housing, bolted on the front cross member of the chassis. This will allow me to create new, shorter down pipes, who will stay within the chassis rails. If I don't find any, I'll make it myself, but if it already exist, could you please tell me where i can find this sort of adaptator ? It must not be as an oil cooler adaptator, it have to be bolted instead of the filter bowl. Thanks, Quote Link to post Share on other sites

BlueTR3A-5EKT Posted January 20, 2014 Report Share Posted January 20, 2014 Something tells me there is a 'spin on' filter conversion for these cars, not unlike the 4 cyl TR item. Meaning you can fit a shorter filter. Would that help. Probably from Mocal - alternatively try Barry Thorne (http://www.classiccarwebsite.com/barry-thorne-spares) or David Manners in Oldbury. Both very competent spares suppliers. If you move the front exhausts up will the LH one not cook the starter? or have you gone to lightweight starter already which is considerably shorter? Surely you are still confounded by the cross balance exhaust tube that almost touched the gearbox drain plug also? I guess that can be produced as a flattened tube, for clearance, with round ends to connect to the left and right systems. Cheers Peter W Quote Link to post Share on other sites
Chris59 Posted January 20, 2014 Author Report Share Posted January 20, 2014 Hi Peter, Yes, a TR spin on filter could be fitted, but will not do the job, as clearance is a real problem. A remote filter is the simpliest solution, and would have the benefit to avoid heat transfer from the exhaust to the oil filter. No problem with the starter motor, the old one is not big enough to cause any trouble, but I'll add a heat deflector, just in case. The front downpipes are connected to the twin exhaust system, who is already at the right level, between the chassis rails : modifying the down pipes will align the whole system, that's another positive consequence. About Mocal website, there is nothing on their website where i could "click" to sent them an email, so i've asked my questions to one of their dealers, Demon Tweeks. Cheers ! JayeM Posted January 20, 2014 Report Share Posted January 20, 2014 Hi Chris, Flexolite make a spin-on filter conversion specifically for the Dart/V8250, and can supply it as a relocation kit also. Here's their website: http://www.flexolite.co.uk/cat.asp?cID=4 Most of us use the spin-on conversion with a short canister filter (Ford Escort around 1981 is a good type) as this clears the 4-branch and cast iron manifolds.
