need advice on the next 2 mods please:

Recommended Posts

1st mod: Narrow belt conversion.

Pros / Cons and things to watch for during dismantling and replacement.

2nd mod: Electronic ignition:

Should I buy the whole lot inc distributor, or just the gubbins inside?

Best buy (not the most expensive!).

Many thanks

Wayne

Hi Wayne,

Narrow belt - definately. It will make fitting the belt by the roadside soooo much easier.

Electronic ignition - there are those that swear by them and those that swear at them.

The normal contact breaker system works well. When it all starts to wear out you will have time to get home and sort it (over a long period)

Electronic module that fits inside the dizzy and costs £30 very good and compensates for a slightly worn dizzy spindle.

When it goes pop have a spare handy - they only die suddenly.

Complete electronic dizzy - as above

Seperate unit plus the dizzy (getting complicated) - works well, die suddenly.

In my mind keep it as simple as you can whilst still doing what you want.

Roger

If the replacement crankshaft pulley doesn't have TDC marked, make your own mark before fitting it - you'll be glad you did afterwards.

If you use a standard lucas type alternator, I found the adjuster bracket from Moss was the best - I did try others.

If you are keeping the dynamo then you may hve to machine a bit off the back of that pulley to line the belt up properly.

They do now ;) but they have been sold to lots of other dealers so you never know whats going to turn up. After all it was originally for an alternator equipped other make.

Just fitted Pertronix electronic unit to my 3a and have the points and condenser that was working (important to have working spare) with screws in a sealed bag with a screw driver. Two screws and two connections and back up and running quickly.

It makes a hell of a difference even with a rebuilt dizzy.

Narrow belt conversion! Nah! each to his own and I know all the reasons why you should.

Can sell you a Racetorations harmonic crankshaft pulley and a dynamo one, sorry no water pump one though.

OK, time to buy the narow belt conversion kit, but first I need to pick your brains guys, please:

Where is the best place to get one?

Will the kit need to be harmonised or not?

Will the dynamo pulley 'automatically' be machined to fit onto the dynamo?

Will I need a new woodruff key?

Do I need any special tools?

What are the pitfalls I can expect on the day of the race:

I have tried doing a google search but the posts are quite old and I need some current advice?
