brian-nz
Hi I am looking to redo the front suspension shortly. I notice that from the production data my TR3 came with competition springs and shocks. How can I tell if it still has these and also would I need to replace the shocks with modern day adjustable ones or just the standard ones? Thanks Brian Edited January 17, 2010 by brian-nz
TR 2100
Hi I am looking to redo the front suspension shortly. I notice that from the production data my TR3 came with competition springs and shocks. How can I tell if it still has these and also would I need to replace the shocks with modern day adjustable ones or just the standard ones? Thanks Brian Hi Brian, The obvious answer is - you would know 'cos they would be totally knackered. Still, shockers can be reconditioned, so if they were the original competition ones, they could be worth saving. Not necessarily to use - original factory competition shocks that are reconditionable would be worth something to someone rebuilding a period rally car, for originality and curiosity value. (There is one type of competition rear shocker that is very rare and desirable) Adjustable shockers can be useful as they allow you to play around with settings and get the best for your taste and roads you drive on. Don't be tempted to go for competition springs - they were hard with an 'H'. Replacing with standard items leaves the suspension as hard as most people would want it, competition use being the exception. For the great majority, replacement with standard units is the most effective. AlanR Edited January 17, 2010 by TR 2100
littlejim
Just for interest. On the 4A I had the PO's Konis which you had to take off to adjust, and which seemed pretty good when taken off and adjusted. During a flash of blood to the brain(???) I decided to order the Moss Spax ones which you don't have take off to adjust. Even on the lowest setting they are extremely stiff (which I like). I have no idea whether the Konis were well worn or come a bit sloppy. (The Spax 'ádjustable' knob is a bit buried in the lower 'Á'arm and a bit harder to get at than I had hoped, but still gettable to. With a 'sports' car I reckon 'ádjustable' is a 'must have'. One more thing you can play around with.
vivdownunder
Hi Brian, If you want to play around with the front or back end to improve handling, these people have put a lot of work into TR's, and are fairly handy if you want to freight parts over to NZ. http://www.smithees-racetech.com.au/historic/triumph.html Regards, Viv.
