grahama
Tony, when I got my car I'm pretty sure it was on synthetic (from history file receipts). I (foolishly I now think) thought 20/50 mineral would be better (thicker) and changed it accordingly. Having so changed it after a while I started to get white scum on base of rocker box filler cap. Aargh, I thought, a blown head gasket. Others wiser than I though told me that low annual mileage and short trips tended to cause this, especially with 20/50's. I did some decent length trips and it went. Also on 20/50 I noticed the pressure is higher (than synth) when cold but NOT as good once the oil is hot. So, I'll be changing back to probably a semi synthetic next change. Regards, Graham

badshead
I wouldn't waste your money on fancy oil, any reputable 20/50 brand will do including the Halfords stuff which is made by Comma. Advice often given is don't use synthetic as it's too thin for old motors and will dislodge the accumulated crud in your oilways. I use Penrite 20/50 - not the cheapest, but good oil pressure and has all the right credentials on the tin.

Richard71
Can I add a quick question to this topic and ask if anyone could give me the part number for the oil filter (spin-on). Any brand part number will do as most motor factors can cross reference. Oh yeah, the longer of the filters preferably. Regards, Richard.

Tom Fremont
For 'Stateside readers a recommended oil is Kendall 20W50 which reputedly still has ZDDP ( Zinc Di(...)(D...)Phospate ) for the time being at least. This critical additive has been removed from Castrol and all other major brand oils I'm told, for the sake of catalytic converters. Unfortunately this additive has been responsible for preserving the tappets in these old style engines of ours. Where we shall find a substitute is yet T.B.D.
