Number Plate Light Wiring Route

Recommended Posts

Having forgotten how the wiring goes from the rear bumper into the boot, and having a new valance and boot with no holes for the wires I need a bit of help. Could someone with an original TR4 please have a look and let me know where the holes are in the valance and the inner panel in the boot. I am assuming the wiring connects in the nearside (RHD car) wheel arch. Many thanks. JJC

Since no-one has replied yet, FWIW, on Lynda's TR4A, the wires go in through the bumper-iron holes each side. If there's no better information forthcoming I'll have a look inside the boot this afternoon to see where it goes internally.

Hi

Just checked in the boot of my 62 tr4, the wires are cable tied to the over rider irons through the rear valence then up between the inner/outer wings and into the boot each side through a gromit high up behind the rear lights, they connect into the loom on each side..

Hope this is clear

Cheers Phil..

Phil's description for the route is spot on.For the concours fraternity the cable should be attached to the bumper iron, using an S type clip, page 95 of Moss' catalogue item 90/ part number 611406.Looks like it might be "unavailable" but specialist fasterner companies can supply.

Thick plastic sheathing for the exposed wiring is recommended to protect it from the elements and stones flying up.

Many thanks to you all, most kind to go crawling underneath cars for me! I'll go and have a look for holes in the inner wing up above the rear light clusters. Amazing really, I thought there would be one hole in the valence below the boot handle. Hopefully this saves me having to borrow a tank cutter to cut a hole! JJC

this is where the holes are on my 4A. Instead of being central they are in line with one of the holes for the lock plate. My bumper didn't have any clips on it to hold the cable; interested in the comments about that. In the boot the black dot beside the rubber plug is the hole the wires went through. Page 96 of the Moss cattledog might give you a clue as to where the harness went. My tub has wire clips high up on both sides but I vaguely recall only pulling the harness out of one side.

Thanks - that single hole was what I was expecting. Looking at the Triumph spares book it says there are only two grommets for the TR4. The Moss catalogue isn't entirely clear about the difference between 4 and 4a but it looks as though the 4a had the single hole centrally and the 4 didn't. I'm only saying that from the numbers of grommets the catalogue says you need. A single hole would be much neater but if I don't have to cut into the valance I'd rather not! About to go and see if I can find the holes high up in the inner wing..........

Hello JJC

Hope the enclosed if of some help. It is the o/s rear inner wing of my 1962 TR4 when it was undergoing restoration and I had not long removed the outer wing. It is an ex California car and the inner tub is unmolested - it still sports its original floor pans, and as you can see even the flanges had no rust on dismantling.

You can just see on the left edge of the photo(pre digital) the hole for the grommet which carried the number plate light wiring. There is a mirror image hole on the near side. I agree the previous comments on TR4s. TR4 wiring left the harness via these holes and the wiring was contained in a black plastic tube which went from the inner wing through the holes in the valance for the bumper irons and up into the overriders. There was no dedicated hole in the rear valance itself for number plate wiring. Can't comment on the 4a as to what it originally had I'm afraid but I believe you were after TR4 details.

Hope this helps.

Hi Trevor - excellent picture. I found the holes and have now wired in the lights. I managed to reuse the plastic tubing off the old wiring harness, pretty much the only bit that was reusable. Despite having rebuilt our TR2 and most of our TR6 I still forget to take enough photos when dismantling. You think you've get every picture you could possibly need but then number plate wiring catches you out! Wonder what will be next. Many thanks. JJC
