Hi,

Just a quick question, I have just checked the bottom gasket set I recently purchased, only to find that the stuff you cram into the gap between the block and the oil seal housing is cork and not felt as the guide books would indicate is this normal and shall I soak in silicone prior to insertion

Cheers

Hello Tiger that will NOT work, buy the felt, soak it in wellseal for a couple of hours and ram it in each side, until you can not possibly get any more in. if you dont get this right its so frustrating taking the engine out again, I know to my shame.

Peter

When I do this, I cut the felt into short lengths about 3/4" long. Then I soak the pieces. Putting these pieces in, one after the other, I take a punch with a square cross-section and ram the small piece into the slot where it goes. Then I insert the next bit and hammer the punch to make sure that the 2nd bit is rammed down tight. This is repeated until its all done.

Short lengths are easier to ram in. If you try it with one long piece, it may leak. If you only have a round punch, it will also do,

I rebuilt my engine a couple of years ago and, on the advice of those at Racetorations, used RTV Silicone sealant. Just pump it in & remove any little beads that pop out anywhere. My block had been caustic cleaned which, I guess, would help the sticktion! I always think it's best to use latest technology where appropriate rather than 1930's 'original'.
