1959 fuel gauge

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a spare fuel gauge and saw one with numeral markings for 1/4 and 3/4 full, while mine, which I believe to be original only has vertical markings in those places.

Could you tell me which is correct, please?

Thanks

Hi Qim,

The easiest method to check for the correct gauge is by the markings on the dial face.

An original TR3 and 3A fuel gauge will have FG.2530 / 20 printed in white around the top of the dial face.

See following photo of a correct gauge in a rather dirty as found condition.

Don't forget that there are two different, yes similar in appearance fuel gauges for sidescreen cars.

The number on the other gauge is X49422/220. PG163.

To make matters a little worse, each of these fuel gauges has a matched tank sender unit. PG163 gauge needs a sender marked on the top with the number FT3331/02.

The gauge discussed by Richard at post #4 needs a sender marked on the top with ST-202137R 80085/

Consequently, to have a gauge that works properly, it's important to have a matched pair.

We will just have to agree to disagree then !! As long as the sender is intended for the moving iron type of gauge (low resistance = empty), then they can be made to work. I have re-calibrated several of these from various sources.

If however the sender is of the type intended to drive a bimetallic strip type gauge, then it will all read backwards as the senders are wired the other way round - low resistance = full.

Cheers

Bob.
