riverstar
My car recently passed the MOT but did have two advisory's (1) Slight play in nearside wheel bearing (2) Slight play offside inner drive shaft UJ On checking the car I couldn't find any play in the nearside wheel but could in the offside wheel when gripped at 12/6. I had planned to to check the whole thing out during the winter months but it now looks as if I will be spending most of that period back in Cambodia so I am now thinking of taking the drive shafts out and getting someone to check them out and replace as necessary, then on my return I can refit and be ready for the spring and summer 2016. I would welcome any suggestions about who I should contact to arrange this. Thanks
RogerH
Silly point but when you checked the wheel for loose bearings did you release the handbrake? To remove and fit a driveshaft takes about two hours. Rather than remove a shaft and getting it checked and worrying about a replacement etc etc why not buy two new driveshafts complete with UJ's. When they turn up they can be fitted in a day - if the removed ones feel OK they could be used a emergency spares. http://www.yell.com/biz/proptech-ltd-kidderminster-7183165/ these (Proptech Kidderminster) have a very good reputation for price and quality. Steves_TR6
Proptech very helpful too, offered to fit UJs for me foc to be sure they were done right ( they assessed my mechanical skills correctly....) Steve Edited July 14, 2015 by SDerbyshire
TriumphV8
Would not fit anything else but CV-joints due to my V8 experience. With a properly tuned TR6 the universal joints are at the limits and the whole trouble with the breaking stub axles was already discussed. A good rebuild of drive shafts include removing of the play in the distance correction, because that can generate quite big imbalance from time to time, and MP inspection of stubaxle, proper tooling and somebody with skill to do the work. So the price difference compared to a complete new CV set is not that big. I have modified Golf GTI CV drive shafts in use and swapped to steel bearing carriers for the wheel bearing and from that time they became reliable both with doubled torque of engine and large offset (-27mm) of the wheels, generating much more load on the wheel bearings. They are not completely free of play but have less than most of the Nissan Tripoid solutions. After years of changing the four universal joints once a year I have now "fit and forget". kob666e
Fitted CV joint d/s and uprated hubs from CDD and feel much more confident with the handling, and no more worrying about UJs or rear hubs. http://classicdrivingdevelopment.co.uk/cats.asp?cID=4&carID=
riverstar
Thanks for the suggestions, I'm very interested in the CV and uprated hubs route and will broach the subject at home when I think there is a chance of a favourable response
Steves_TR6
I have fitted the cdd cv driveshafts and am pleased with them. There is a school of thought that cv joints aren't suitable for the rwd setup, but so far, I year and 4000 miles and a rolling road session :-), they're working well. There's a marked absence of TR Twitch with the new setup and I believe I can feel more suppleness in the suspension over changes in camber under power etc. Easy fit too, as long as you don't 'extend the job' by rebuilding the diff, fitting new brakes, etc etc etc :-) Steve Edited July 19, 2015 by SDerbyshire
