Prospect
Ruby is and not pulling at under 2,500 RPM and hesitating until 2,500 upwards then seemed to run perfectly OK. Pulled the, newly installed plugs with the correct gap. BUT, colours were N0.1 black and burnt, No.2. black/grey, N0. 3 Brown, No.4 black/grey. Trip was circa 40 miles mostly country lanes with a 15 mile period on dual carriageway at around 3,500 revs. in overdrive 4th Difference in colours appears to rule out Stromberg problems or am I wrong? Same for ignition issues? Starting to think it is valves but before taking the head off - it was skimmed with new rockers by race engineers only 2,00 miles ago - would be grateful for any thoughts or suggestions from those with much more recent experience than I have. RogerH
Hi Tony, regarding the hesitant running at low revs - have you checked your carb dash pots for oil - there should be some. Roger
Lebro
+1, also check ignition timing - may be retarded too much
boxofbits
Tony It definitely rules Carbs and ignition IN. Check your points gap (.015") then your timing. As Roger says check your dash pots, though this is usually a flat spot when pulling away. Also check your air filters are not blocked and both carb linkages are opening together when you press the throttle, as sometimes the small clamps come loose. Doubt whether you need to take the head off as it's an ancillary problem Regards Kevin Edited August 23, 2014 by boxofbits
Lebro
Are the carbs simply set too weak ? Bob.
littlejim
I'd add in checking whether there is any crud in the fuel filter bowl near the pump.
peejay4A
Was it running OK before these symptoms?
Prospect
Many thanks to all, I will follow your advice and suspect one or other adjustment will cure the issue. Bit of a relief if it does was not really looking forward to taking the head off. I will also check the diaphrams in the strombergs and replace if slightly suspect. Pete, she was running beautifully before this having put in new plugs and new distributor cap and wires after she went on to 3 cylinders. Kevin, she runs on electronic ignition so no points issues in theory.
