Torbay Motor Club, Mamhead Hillclimb - 30th May
On what turned out to be a lovely early summer’s day, despite forecasts that suggested otherwise, three TRs arrived to contest the Mamhead round of the Revington TR / TR Register Sprint and Hill Climb Championship held in the grounds of Mamhead House set in an attractive wooded valley overlooking the Exe estuary with Exmouth visible in the distance.
An enthusiastic patron who competes in his Lotus Elan makes for an enjoyable club event. Unfortunately Graham Ramsey had withdrawn prior to the event and the gods had not smiled on Jonathan Boyes whose weekend was ruined when on a wet Saturday, taking advantage of the opportunity to compete on both days of the event hosted by the Torbay Motor Club, lost grip exiting the final bend, careered backwards over the finish line and ended up in the woodland damaging both ends of his newly painted TR7 Sprint.
Jonathan nevertheless displaying great enthusiasm and putting on a brave face despite what he must have been feeling entered his road going Mazda MX5 for Sunday posting some respectable times, but obviously not counting for TR honours.
This left just two Triumphs to contest for championship honours. Neil Revington, our championship sponsor, in his Tuned Roadgoing TR5 and Graham Howard in his Roadsports TR6.
A short but interesting course; the start is in front of the house and after approximately 75m initially turns into a long left before winding its way up through the wooded valley and the finish on a short straight after approximately 500m.
Whilst dry on Sunday and often sunny and reasonably warm, the tree lined upper part of the course was far from dried out after the rain of Saturday and care was required during the two practice runs.
Both Neil and Graham improving by about 1.5 seconds each on the second practice run with Neil approximately 2 seconds faster than Graham.
The well organised event held a qualifying timed run before lunch with further improvements from both TR’s. At the lunch break Graham’s TR6 had developed a misfire on returning to the paddock and many thanks go to Neil who spent much of his lunch break tracing the problem to a blocked injector.
Battle resumed after the break, the organisers fitting in a further three timed runs that saw Neil improve with each run posting a best of 27.11 seconds .Graham did a further two runs before calling a halt all within 0.52 seconds but could not better his first qualifying run of 29.57 seconds. With the car popping away loudly on overrun and 80 miles to drive home he decided to call it a day in case the injector blocked again and reduced him to five cylinders for the journey home.
Jonathan posted a very respectable 28.89 in his MX5 hopefully making him feel a little better about the weekend.
The provisional TR results were:
Neil Revington: 27.11 secs, Graham Howard: 29.57 secs

Revington TR / TR Register Sprint and Hillclimb Championship
Gurston Down Hillclimb, Sunday 18 April
Winter is over, the preparation is complete, and so to the first event of the Championship calendar organized by the BARC at Gurston Down not far from Wilton. This is a truly fabulous venue that attracts a massive entry and thousands of spectators, with facilities for the drivers that are second to none, reflecting the standard of the organisation.
The TRs had nine entrants and several others had their entries turned down. The lineup, in number order, consisted of:
- Jonathan Boyes with his Tuned Roadgoing TR7 Sprint having had a complete facelift over the winter and now resplendent in its works rally livery.
- Graham Howard in his Roadsport Mimosa TR6 sounding even better than it did last year.
- Graham Ramsey in his Roadsport TR7.
- Roger McEwen in his Tuned Roadgoing TR6.
- Rob Roodhouse in his Tuned Roadgoing TR6.
- John Weedon in his always immaculate Modified TR5, double driven with his son Jonathon.
- Hugh Maund in his Modified TR7V8, double driven with Larry Jeram-Croft. The car had been given a respray over the winter and looked very pristine.
Practice went fairly smoothly with Larry and Hugh complaining of problems with the car over the finishing line, and during the lunch break the rear anti-roll bar was removed and the toe in adjusted. Graham Howard was running very fast, giving Roger McEwen some competition even though he is in a lower class. The work that Larry and Hugh did during lunch did not seem to change things much, and it is a possibility that increased age of the drivers was a contributory factor rather than the car, or could it have been the fact that John was getting dangerously close to beating the larger car? All the runs went well without any problems for the TRs, an indication of the level of preparation and commitment that the TR fraternity has. Graham further worried Roger by beating him on his first timed run and it was clear that this had upset Roger who made good on the second run, even though Graham was within eight hundredths of a second of achieving the Class 1B Bogey time. Rob Roodhouse gets faster on every run and having smashed the Class 2B bogey time last year did so again this year taking it under the magic 40 seconds.
The final results were:
- Hugh Maund 37.33
- John Weedon 37.57
- Larry Jeram-Croft 39.26
- Rob Roodhouse 39.95
- Jonathon Weedon 41.05
- Jonathan Boyes 42.39
- Roger McEwen 43.88
- Graham Howard 44.58
- Graham Ramsey 49.05
Many thanks to Dale Huxford who took the photographs.

Tevington TR / TR Register Sprint and Hillclimb Championship
Wiscombe Park Hillclimb, Sunday April 25th.
Wiscombe Park Hillclimb is in a splendid valley south of Honiton on a private estate. The paddock is in one side of the valley with the course on the other, the top half being through woodland. The valley seems to have its own micro-climate and the competitors certainly experienced some very changeable weather on the day which makes the competition slightly interesting. The TRs were not particularly well supported for this event consisting of Hugh Maund and Larry Jeram-Croft in the Modified TR7 V8, John Weedon in the Modified TR5 and Roger McEwen in his Tuned Roadgoing TR6.
Practice was definitely in the wet and it was difficult for anybody to get under the one minute mark for the first try although it was getting drier as the morning passed, and by the second run, times had improved by about five seconds. As it happened the TRs were in a fortunate position of being one of the first classes to run, as the weather was good for the first period in the afternoon but later the rain returned and many of the racing cars in the later classes didn’t bother with a second attempt in the rain.
After lunch Hugh set the pace with an exact 50 seconds, with John less than one second behind, Larry on 53 and Roger just under 56. It was clear that if the weather held there would be a good competition for the Championship points, and to the dismay of the V8 drivers it was John who took the honours with an incredible time of 48.75 seconds, followed by Hugh with 50.21 just pipping Larry with 50.66, and Roger crossing the beam with for him a respectable 54.85.
After a swift drink in the beer tent and discussions of the work required before the next event, John picked up a very impressive and well deserved trophy as class winner from the Woolbridge Motor Club, to whom many thanks are given for a well organised event.

The 2009 Drivers’ Meeting, Awards Presentation and Dinner
The 2009 Drivers’ Meeting, Awards Presentation and Dinner was held at the Wroxton House Hotel near Banbury on the 21st November.
Roger McEwen chaired the meeting and reviewed the previous seasons activities noting in particular that sixteen new records had been set during the season, reflecting the continued enthusiasm for the sport in the TR fraternity.
23 TR Register members had entered the Championship in 2009 compared with 31 the year previously, and thirteen different competitors had scored the maximum ten points. The most popular event was the Goodwood Sprint, closely followed by the Gurston Down Hillclimb and Castle Combe Sprint.
It was pointed out that 2010 is the 50th Anniversary of the Loton Park Hillclimb and we have been invited to the celebrations on the 11th July with a TR Class in the Classic Cars day.
There was much discussion regarding the proposed new Sprint & Hillclimb Regulations issued by the MSA, the governing body of motorsport in the UK. It was agreed that we would not change our Championship Regulations unless requested specifically to do so by the MSA. The establishment of a class structure for non TR Triumphs was put in abeyance due to the lack of interest overall. The tyre regulations were agreed as List 1A for Class 1 and Lists 1A and 1B for Class 2. After some debate the scoring system was left exactly as previous years
It was generally agreed that the use of the TR Register website was a major benefit to the Championship, and Roger stressed the need for competitors to submit reports and photographs.
The dinner, which was attended by approximately twenty including partners, was to the usual very high standard and Neil Revington, the Championship sponsor, was our guest of honour and presented the awards.
