TR4 Removal of gearbox

Recommended Posts

Gentlemen,

The progress of my TR4 has been progressing well into today.
I took the tub off the chassis last week and the plan was to remove the overdrive gearbox today in readiness to take it to Pete Cox for restoration.

Firstly I removed the prop shaft and then all the gearbox fixings to the engine were removed, I left two of the studs at the top of the gearbox in place to give a support to it. A block of wood was place under the engine sump to give support to the rear of the engine. Removed the two large bolts that held the rear of the box to its mounting. Then put a strap round the gearbox and hooked it to an engine crane to give support to the box.

Then my problem appeared. With two of us pulling back on the gear box whilst the box was obviously loose it would not pull back and disengage from the engine. We tried lifting/lowering the box a little via the engine crane in between tugging and wiggling the box.  But the box would not slide out. I did not try levering the box as it is a very early one with a thin flange.

I put the gearbox into neutral before I stared to remove it.

My first thought was that the clutch had frozen onto the flywheel but thinking it through I couldn’t see that this would prevent the removal of the box if it has.

I would like advice please on : what I have done wrong and what I need to do to enable me to complete the removal of the gearbox.

Many thanks.

Graham

Hi Graham

just like fitting it, you need to have the engine and GB in alignment.

Although the GB will appear loose it is simply turning on the input shaft.

The friction ion the input shaft is what is keeping it in place.
