TR6 Gearbox Query,

Recommended Posts

One for the TR6 sages, I have a TR6 gearbox with A type overdrive, serial number CD 29xxx, I've checked in the tables and this is either TR5 or 6.

Noticed though that the Gearbox input shaft finishes flush with the flange of the box, and does not protrude the 15mm or so, that I thought all TR6 boxes did. Obviously it may have been messed with, and had  say a TR4 input shaft fitted, but does anyone have any other thoughts?

John.

Hi John if I’m understanding you correctly in what you are asking, the input shaft should be flush with the front of the bell housing, I have a spare box  for the 5 in the shed and it’s sitting on the floor upright on the bell housing, so must be flush

John - it’s the other way round - early boxes up to TR4 had the longer input shaft which protruded beyond the bellhousing edge , so they won’t stand up straight - later boxes , it was level so they would

i was told ST did away with the longer ones so the boxes could be stored more easily in the factory and didn’t have a propensity to fall over. Don't forget if you do store them upright, you need to put a small self tapper in the breather hole on the top of the gear selector remote cover to stop any residual oil in the box emptying onto your nice floor! The breather is small hole ( about 1/16th) usually on the left nearest the bellhousing - I have a feeling this wasn’t there on A type OD boxes because the OD unit had a breather of its own

cheers Rich
