TR2 More Hub Woes

Recommended Posts

Following a successful front hub repair on my TR2.

As I was pre-pairing to go to the international and was going to replace the wheel cylinders on the front drum brakes.

After removing the brake drum there was a metallic click and then something fell to the floor see the attached photos.

This is the corner of the hub and stud slightly broken, To clarify this is the previously intact Hub which was not repaired it looks to be the original with grease nipple.

I have a spare Hub with two studs missing so put in the repair stud in a re-tapped hole and a replacement stud.

Neither stud would tighten both spinning in there respective locations.

I think the hub is a wax copy.

Suggestions would be helpful or if anyone knows of a complete drum brake hub as I have tried three suppliers with no luck so far.

I have contacted TR specialists including the ones you mentioned and a few others now some said no others are to get back to me.

However I did notice Moss are selling original front wire wheel hubs for left hand only.

This started me thinking ( which is dangerous) could I use the wire wheel hub and cut off the wire wheel extension?

I think this could result in a new hub which would fit either side.

It does seem a bit wrong ruining a good original new spare part.

Hi Ewan,

the wire wheel hub has pegs in the stud holes - not sure it they will come out.

However it could be worth getting them to send you one to see if it will work. You could have it by tomorrow morning.

The pegs are probably screwed or pressed into a smaller hole which could be tapped would need to get 4 new studs as well.

I think it might be worth a shot.

Not looking forward to a hacksaw attack on the long bit.

To update the wire wheel hub arrived from moss on Friday in its original wax it looked awful.

Once the wax was removed it looked much better as Rodger noted there pegs on the wire wheel Hub.

These turned out to be pressed in and mushroomed to retain them.

So after a lot of work with hand tools the pegs were Knocked out and holes tapped for new studs. The spline extension was attacked with a hack saw and it looked similar to the original with a few detailed differences. the major one being a thicker extension to the outside face.

It is now refitted and the car back in daily use for this good weather we are having.

Unfortunately I missed the international at Lincoln due to this so hope that those of you that could make it had a good time in the sunshine.

Whilst it feels reassuring to have an unused new hub in place with the amount of work involved in converting the part. I don't know if I will do it again for to the other side.

All

Thanks for your comments I was looking to get the car back on the road soonest and it was the weekend so did it myself.

I did not consider the balance to be critical as the hub all near to the centre of rotation. I have had no vibrations so far.

Would look at help If I did it again and it was planed.

Thanks again :)
