Ernest
Hi All As ever seeking advice. Just had lovely run in TR (first for about 4-5 weeks) and found overdrive not working at all. When switch flicked on the ammeter (sp) move abrupty towards + and when flicked off ammeter moves back. So I am assuming that it won't be electirical? Any advice would be very much appreciated. The car is a 1972 CP model Ernest
john.r.davies
The O/d servo draws a LOT of current, and a second winding that takes much less then holds it in place. So your ammeter reading would indicate that the servo cannot move far enough to engage the second winding. The resosn for this isn't clear, and needs more diagnostic testing. Canley's have two pages on overdrives from their original guru John Kipping, this is the D-type one, and includes some trouble shooting advice: https://www.canleyclassics.com/technical-archive/the-d-type-overdrive John
fisicx
Had a similar problem and the solution was to just replace the coil. You have to remove the tunnel to do the job but that then gives you a chance to degunk everything check all the gearbox wiring.
