tim hunt
Some time ago I had great difficulty in removing a TRE from its tie rod, A ball joint separator would not fit snugly enough to get proper purchase and I was struggling, loosening the securing nut and jacking under it had no effect, the seized joint supported part of the car's weight with no problem. I then had a brain wave, placed a cloth round the TRE and poured a kettle of boiling water carefully over it. This had the effect if expanding the TRE very slightly but sufficient that the joint almost fell apart. I mention this in case it might help someone else out. Motorsport Mickey
+1 for expansion. Temporal malformation of the tapers is a little quicker. Mick Richards

BrianC
Seems a lot easier and safer than my last-resort method involving a pair of club hammers.
