Head Lamp main beams

Recommended Posts

Hi, My headlamp main beams have stopped working. 1974 TR6. The dipped beams and side lights work fine. Does anyone know if the main beams have a fuse or a relay that solely works the main beams. My bulbs are good. Any suggestions are welcome.

Based on your description that Dip works, and the side lights are OK, the Lighting switch on the dash is working.

Some background:

The headlamp wire from the Lighting switch (Blue) connects to the DIp/Main column switch.

The Blue/White wire from the Dip/Main switch feeds Main beam and the Main beam indicator in the speedo.

The Dip/Main column switch also incorporates a headlamp flasher facility.

Test 1:

Does the headlamp flasher on the column work? (Main beam on and indicator lights up)

If yes: it is likely the dip/main switch section of the switch

If no: Probably a wiring fault - check that the Blue/White cable is not disconnected from the column switch (under the dash)

Good luck

TT

Mike,

As above single blue white wire from dip switch to nearside just behind headlight then splits into a separate wire for NS & OS lamps in a 4 way bullet connector which does suffer from corrosion.

Lots of bullet connectors in that position for side, indicator, horn, dip headlamp & main beam and can get corroded from water ingress.

There are no relays or fuses for headlights in a standard wiring setup.

You will find a set of TR6 circuit diagrams showing wire colours here http://advanceautowire.comshould help with fault finding I assume you have a multimeter.

Mike:CR series isn't at this site. Use this instead.

Checking the High beam switched vs the high beam "pull to pass" may distinguish a purple v blue circuit issue and also bypasses the dash switch.

From your description TT sounds like he has the issue sorted
