Rattly Gears

Good evening Gents,

I have the gearbox out at the moment. When a gear is engaged and the output shaft is rotated rapidly forwards & backwards I can hear a nice rattle from the gears. Reverse & 4th seem to rattle a bit less.

 

I have no experience with gearboxes but I'm guessing that any play in the gear train should be barley perceptible?

 

Anyone had a Moss refurbished gearbox?

just what is rattlin aboot,

the actual gear on the shaft, and which shaft, main or counter

the gears when locked into mesh with the syncro hub

the gap between each gears teeth

the gap between each gears faces,{free play / backlash}

is it forads / backwards movement

is it rotational movement

 

All gears have a wee bit of play when meshed

there shud be v v little play of the gears sideways movement, as this would indicate worn bushes

same to for back,n forads play, this would indicate thrust / backlash settings all wrang

 

A wee film clip could show whats moving better,

Managed to get a good look at the box this evening.

 

Its clearly evident that the input shaft bearing has gone plus the splines have worn.

 

So has anyone had a Moss or Rimmer Bros refurb gearbox?

I'm interested in the answer regarding decent replacement g/boxes - if the car isn't in regular use then i can see the attraction of rebuilding your own, but personally i'd prefer to get a decent replacement to minimise down-time for the car.

I do have someone in mind for the gearbox however a refurbished box for £500 seems quite reasonable.

 

Hence can anyone who has tried one please let me know what your thoughts were?
