LED conversion; Which flasher relay?

Recommended Posts

Gents and ladies

I am converting the '6' lighing to LED

Rear lights / brake lights are good.

I want to do the indicators next as I already have some of the bulbs

The car is fitted with a 2 pin flasher relay, but, I have an electronic 3 pin free gratis.

Questions;

Can I use the 3 pin in any particular configuration?

If so, how?

If not, does anyone have any advice as to the 2 pin relay I should buy?

From my experience and usage, if you are going to convert all the indicators then you will need to insert at least 2 resistors into the circuit and then just use a 2 pin electronic flasher or an electronic/mechanical version. I have put the resistors inside the small shelf area behind the rear side lens at the rear. From inside the boot. They are easy to fit, but they can get warm, so just as a precaution I have wrapped them in exhaust wrap. You can find them on ebay, cheap as chips.

I know I'm biased, as we sell them, but even just for info have a look at http://www.litezupp.org.uk/

Click on flashers and then click on the resistors picture for a simple diagram on how to wire them in.

I hope that helps

best Bill

Well, your flasher says "for LED" and 0.02~2.0-Amps so it ought to work. Just take E to a convenient earth and L & B as original (make sure it's the right way round :rolleyes: the old Lucas job didn't care!). HOWEVER ... just checking the TR6 circuit I see that the flasher is continuously powered, so it will sit there quietly oscillating to itself all the time the ignition's on. This means when you indicate it will be randomly part way through the flash cycle, so you may get up to half a second or even more before other road users see any ilumination. Also, is your flasher *completely* electronic, or is there a relay which will cycle continuously - if so, what's the lifetime!!!

I bought a 2 pin electronic flasher which doesn't have this problem (if you think it IS a problem, of course!) and works well (incandescent bulbs) eliminating the "slow flash at tickover" problem. I see there are plenty of "2 pin flasher" on Fleabay which mention LED.

Thank you both

I will play with the 3 pin relay, just for fun, then get a 2 pin, the cost is minimal.
