Learned Gentlemen

I am converting my TR4 to a Diaphragm Clutch using genuine NOS Laycock cover & plate. My questions are.

1) Is it advisable and worth the extra cost to use a bronze bearing carrier and stainless steel fork pin.?

2) Looking at the variety of release bearings on offer which is the best and who supplies them.?

With my advancing years this is not a job I want to do again so I want to use the best quality parts available. Your thoughts and advice would be appreciated.

Cheers Chris.

Hi Chris,

If it was me I would use a bronze bearing.

I wouldn't use a stainless fork pin - use the best standard pin available by TRShop, Moss etc. DO NOT rely totally on this pin - you MUST have a secondary pin at right angles. Be careful with the cross shaft- fork- pin set up. Some of the offerings do not align themselves very well.

I have an expensive RHP bearing from Moss.and is working well after 15,000miles. They also do cheap bearings DO NOT buy these.

Are you going to use the standard TR4 clutch slave set up (with return spring etc)

The TR4A set up keeps the thrust bearing in contact (almost) all the time and adjusts for wear (no return spring)

I think the Diaphragm clutch has different attachment hole spacing(s) - are you aware of this.

Hi Roger

Thanks for your response, unless someone advises otherwise I will be keeping the existing slave cylinder and return spring set up, and yes I am aware that the Flywheel will need to be re-drilled to attach the cover plate to the flywheel.

Cheers Chris

Release bearing must match the diaphram type cover, & re drilling the flywheel, I did mine without problems but extreme accuracy is required or it will be out of balance, the most critical holes are for the dowels.
