lever shocks fluid

Recommended Posts

Doesn't the weight of the fluid affect the damping rate? If so why would you chance it with anything that's not specifically made for shock absorbers unless you know for certain that it's the same stuff?

Hi John,

jack oil is not quite the same thing . . . . it will suffice in emergency, but average jack oil is heavier for a start, thus slowing the damper action, and doesn't contain the anti-foaming agents present in shock oil, net result after hard driving being gas bubbles and a damper that isn't functioning adequately.

Shock oil is costly for a reason, jack oil is considerably cheaper for converse reasons - it doesn't have to cope with such an arduous environment !

Cheers

Alec
