AlanT
And DONT buy a reconditioned engine part, from Rimmers or anyone else, and ASSUME its OK. Check every last corner of it! One way to do this is comparison with the one you are replacing.
AlanT
Now can one of you engine experts explain why this engine will run lightly loaded at 70mph for 18 miles and make no smoke but makes smoke when loaded by a hill. I can't see how the oil control ring theory fits with this. Maybe it does. But how? When the engine is heavily loaded the combustion chamber pressure will be higher, this is how you get more power. This will tend to keep oil out of the combustion chamber. I think this is somehow to do with crankcase pressure. But I am not an engine expert. Peter Cobbold
Alan, Crankcase pressure build up under load - from blocked flame trap maybe? If pressure built up it might not disperse quickly after the hill - so oil burning continues. Crank oil seals wont like it either -should be leaked oil there. I checked Heywood - no info. of any use. Willem
Someone once told me, when fitting rings observe the gaps and fit them like a Mercedes star. Did someone mention that? Although I doubt this much oil useage can be caused by that. And leakage in the combustion chamber gives fouled plugs?.
