rear brake drum puller

Recommended Posts

Alfin drums don't like being clouted with a big hammer, that's for sure, and they don't always accommodate a puller well either, depending on the particular fin arrangement.

Long ago, not on a TR, I managed to winkle off awkward Alfin type drums by making up a half dozen hardwood wedges and spacing fairly evenly around the drum, and then tapping away patiently round and round with a modest size copper hammer. Rather a slow process, but the drums came off safely in due course.

Pulling drums rarely works.

Apply plenty of Plus-Gas to the centre register & through the stud holes, then strike the drum face towards the backplate hard at the edge with a hide mallet, working around the periphery until it starts to free off.

This type of levering almost always does the trick.

Alec's trick can be enhanced by wedging as described, releasing the opposite hub & shaft assembly from the axle, then walloping the hub nut to push the hub through the drum.

Do not forget to slack off the brake adjusters as far as you can and be sure the wheel cyl slides up and down in the backplate OK if it is Girling braked.

I have recently gone to the effort of undoing the wheel cyls and abutment/adjuster from the back plates as the drums had seized onto the shoes. This involved a mallet and the drums were cast iron 10" x 2 1/4" Girling type.

Cheers
