I need to buy a set of door seals for my TR4 restoration and noticed whilst fitting a new sill there is a narrow channel welded all the way round the door opening and up the edge of the screen which looks like it is ment to hold a door seal.

The trouble is, the new sill doesn't have this channel attached and most of the original up the B post is rotted away. I can't find any channel listed in any parts books.

Do new seals have a different fixing method on 4's? and if so how? please if anyone can answer.

Thanks

Hi Phil,

The TR4 origonally had what is referred to as a "fur-flex" door seal that fitted into the channel you are talking about they tended to trap water and rot the channel away. Most have been discarded as they did not work very well and replaced with the TR6 type seal that clips onto the edge of the door opening. This means that you dont need the seperate rubber seal as well. It is best to clip some of the seal round the opening and test fit the doors before finally welding in the new sills to make sure everything is in place and the doors will close correctly when finished.

Cheers

Alan

My `65 4  has a secondary seal, which i think is what you are refering to, it clips into a "u" channel about 8mm wide on the outside of the furflex, my car has these riveted onto the sill and b-post, which is why they are missing on the new one.

They're not seen on that many cars, so how important they are is a mystery, but must have been fitted for a reason, perhaps to prevent water from hitting the furflex?

I can get pictures if required.

Rob.

Hi Tony - I can reveal all.

The secondary seal is used to accommodate a separate rubber seal that squeezes directly into the channel to which you refer, separate to the furflex. This is totally as original. The TR5 and later had the combined seal. My very late TR4a (CTC 78635) has a very original shell and this is intact - I also have both the genuine seals, the rubber and the blue furflex - gasp I hear you all say.

You can buy this channel from MINI specialists as it is used on the mini door seal and I certainly purchased some from MOSS to put on my surrey top in the same car. It come is 2 foot lengths for about £3 each. This either plug welds to the sill or you can pop rivet it on - dont use self tappers or the rubber seal wont fir.

Alternatively Landrover make a very good combined coloured furflex and rubber seal that obviates the need for the channel, but does not fit quite so neatly and makes door adjustment tricky (yawn!) - I have this on my TR4 rally car as once its done its fine - costs to do a whole car with a surrey top was about £60 all in. Comes in six colours as I recall including, you guessed it, shadow blue.

Hope this helps - if your near Hampshire come and look at my cars if it helps.

Regards

Tony

Phil,

My TR4 had the remains of the steel channels with sponge rubber seals in place plus a black plastic U shaped trim pushed over the perimeter edges of the door aperture opening.

I decided not to replace the steel channels due to the corrosion problems so went for the TR6 type fuflex seal which fits to the aperture opening.

However you should be aware that if you go down this route this seal will then run along the top of the triangular gusset plate at the base of the B post and thus across the interior door panel making it more difficult to close the door, plus that part of the trim panel is then outside the seal line, ie out in the wet...!

I have removed the existing gusset plate and internal channel strengthener and replaced them with the one piece TR6 triangular gusset plates which is pressed to recessed inwards and thus allows the furflex to follow the door aperture and the seal then sits against the painted metal of the door and not the trim.

All very non-original but I think it all looks Ok and it works.

Regards, Richard

How highly irregular and not original - youd never catch me butchering an original car like that !!! (ahem)

Sounds a good way round it - I think the TR6 seals Richardrefers to and the landrovers ones I mentioned may well be one and the same.

Tony
