racey
Hi to all you And just to introduce myself, my name is Graham Race (hence Racey!) aged 53 and living in a small village just outside Malton in North Yorkshire. My pride and joy is a 1973 CR TR6 in Sapphire blue and my question is this, the bumpers both back and front are in need of a re chrome , which, to have the job done right is costly and time consuming especially at this time of year when everyone is looking to smarten up there prides. Now, I have seen these stainless steel items available on the old tinter and was thinking Hey no more buggering about trying to keep on top of chrome in these British climes so was wondering if anyone has gone down this route and what problems you have had with them regards fitting, appearance etc - basically, is it a good route to go down? Any and all advice would be gratefully received Thank you Graham
Mike Goldthorpe
I remember this from recently. jimcwestie
I ordered a set for my 72 TR6 on the 4th of March and are presently on their way. I was told delivery is slow due to the demand at this time of year. I am looking forward to getting themand I will post some photos when the bumpers arrive in the next few days. dykins
Graham I bought stainless bumpers for my TR4 from Harringtons. Quality is excellent, I don't know why anyone would bother trying to get old ones chromed. There has been several discussions on here and I can't recall any bad feedback about them. They really are a "fit and forget" item. Regards Peter
RogerH
Hi Graham, welcome to the forum, In principle stainless anything is a great idea. The only down side that I can come up with is if you get a deep score/scratch (quite rare). It may be difficult to remove. Whereas with Chrome you just get it re-chromed. Good Chrome should last a life time with a bit of care. Roger
D1070
how about the bumperless look?,looks good,(imho) and saves weight, cheers, Laurence
Steve P
Graham, I looked at rechroming but was very expensive. Ended up with stainless from Harrington. Mine came in 7 days. They fit and look fine. Not as substantial as original bumpers though I guess the weight saving is the pay off. Cheers Steve
Phil73TR6
Hello Graham. I ordered a front bumper for my 73 TR6 from Harringtons together with a full set of bumpers for my friends 59 Lotus Elan. All arrived safely in a few weeks. Quality and fit is very good. Finish on the Lotus bumpers was mirror like but mine was not quite as good. I will try to correct this with some elbow grease. Just be careful that you get the European spec of the right year. You can easily end up with the American version which is not quite the same - it has holes in it for different fittings. I work with mirror polished stainless sheet a lot.To be fair I don't think you can get quite the same depth of mirror shine as chrome, but it will not go rusty!
