randall977
The new type piston rings comprise of one deep ring with a coil behind it (sits nearest the gudgeon pin), a stepped ring (next one up widest bit nearest the gudgeon pin) and a final flat sided ring. Is this the correct order for the last two - particularly the stepped ring which I assume takes the place of the original tapered ring and is the same way round (all beit stepped)? Ian Vincent
Hi, In the past when I have replaced rings, I have always put the stepped ring at the top. My understanding is that the step is there to avoid the new ring clipping the edge of any worn area at the top of the bore. Rgds Ian
randall977
I should add that I have new pistons and liners...and not 100% sure if I mixed up the order of the top two rings... Edited March 29, 2010 by randall977
graeme
The following link gives good info on rings. http://www.deves.com/pistonrings_inst.cfm The middle ring should have the step on the lower edge.
randall977
Horray - I got it right! Thanks! I have just found three sets (x6) of original copper wet liner seals in a box with the head gasket - sadly too late to put them in my engine - are they rare? Also...head gasket - dry or use sealer as well?
