Crankshaft Split Oil Seal

I'm about to rebuild my engine and fit the lip type oil seal. The scrolls have been ground off the crank, but the fitting instructions indicate that 2 oil drain holes (in addition to the one thats already there) are drilled in the rear main bearing cap, presumably to aid the drainage of the oil and to prevent too much build up against the new seal.

 

Does anyone have any thoughts or experience on this? Do I risk weakening the bearing cap? Are the holes really necessary?

 

Any advice based on the fitting of these seals would be really useful!

Geoff,

 

I am fairly sure that there is a post somewhere else on the forum by someone who did as you suggest and installed the split type seal without drilling the bearing cap and the seal leaked.

 

I did drill mine and it wasn't too big a deal, the cap is cast iron and drills fairly easily and to get the right alignment I pushed a piece of wooden dowel into the existing center hole to give me a guide to follow. And start with a small pilot hole first, then you have scope to change direction slightly as you open it out if you come out in the wrong place on the other side.

[Geoff - I posted the same question a few months ago when I was at about the same point as you. I too opted to get the holes drilled (at disappointingly high expense) because I found an article somewhere from someone who didn't drill the holes and consequently got a leak. The engineering firm I used whose views I would respect said it would make no difference to the end cap strength. When it came back the holes looked pretty small compared with the cap so I am reasonably happy. Just annoyed they didn't do it when they ground off the scroll on the crankshaft. Good luck. JJC
