Carpet sets

Recommended Posts

Hello

Does anyone have recent experience of either Moss or JSkinner and can let me know thoughts on their wool carpet sets.

Quality and fit OK?

Don't want to plum for one supplier just for everyone to them tell me I should have gone to the other one when it doesn't fit right.

Any other recommendations for suppliers?

Many thanks

Nick

Skinners, excellent quality and fit, although may not have on the shelf and therefore you may have to wait awhile.

Cheers

I can't comment on the relative quality, but you may find they don't all supply the colour you want. Only Skinners did the carpets in the right shade of red to match the interior of my TR3A and then only in wool (not my preferred option as the car is usually driven topless and hence likely to get wet).

TR Shop every time as they use a different supplier to all the rest. Forget any of the other aforementioned especially the latter now as rubbish quality and poor fit.(FWIW the main supplier of wool carpet to the others machine that makes the wool type is broken down and wont be fixed for the foreseable future. So what is being produced now is absolute c**p and not even fit to put on a garage floor!!)

I think the story from Skinners was that they were down to their last piece of wool carpet in the colour that I need so that kind of corresponds with what you are saying. I've emailed them and asked them to send me a sample. I'll also try to get into to see what TR Shop have got. I just want to get it right and not ended up with a badly fitting kit and as you say c**p quality. My experience so far has been that repro parts vary so much is specification and quality that it pays to check out all the options.

As an alternative, given Stuart's update, I think I would seriously consider using a recommended trimmer who will either source the carpet you require or make up a set using your own material. Of course, you will need a set of original carpets for him to use as templates and probably have a long wait as good trimmers are very busy. However, like some well-known 'one-man and his dog' TR specialists, their workmanship is first class and prices surprisingly reasonable.

many years ago our boy got his 6 trimmed by a local firm in Sunderland Kish or trimfit not sure and they trimmed the carpets to suit the car as the cockpit was bare (he might have had scraps from the original as a starter)

it might be the same in other parts of the country, got to be more expensive but they will be totally responsible for the fit and finish to which when finished will be to your satisfaction, if not then you get to argue

buying a ready made set can lead to error in fitting (according to some suppliers etc etc) you know all the excuses

a guy in the cleveland group does trimming (ex NTRC) Dave Ferguson i think it is Tees Trim i do have a number if you PM me

just another thought

cheers

RE: JOHN SKINNER ( Manufacturing ) Ltd's Carpet Sets

Hello,

I had my attention brought towards this forum by a mutual tradesman in the Industry who thought it best I try to clear up the current situation with regards to JOHN SKINNER ( Manufacturing ) Ltd's carpet Sets.

The main manufacturer of the high-end Wool Carpet (raw material) in the industry have been having problems with their Yarn supplier initially (I believe they went ‘bust’ during the start of the economic downturn), and then with their Backing Machine at their factory – this has been the story for over 6 months now! We have used this quality of carpet for a number of years and thus these problems have put us in a rather awkward position. We still have stock in a few colours in this quality carpet but how long this stock will last will depend on demand . Black is currently out of stock.

As suggested in previous posts, I agree it would be best to check and receive a sample prior to ordering.

Due to the on-going manufacturing problems we were forced to seek an alternative supplier of Wool Carpet. After much searching we chose what we considered to be the best alternative available until the manufacturing problems are resolved. We too agree that the alternative quality is not as good as the quality we normally supply, however like many other trim manufacturers our hands are tied and currently I am sorry to say we have no alternative, if there was an alternative be assured we would use it.

Please also note this temporary change has nothing to do with making more profit from using a cheaper carpet, the temporary carpet price is almost identical. We did at the beginning of this problem buy in from other wholesalers our normal wool carpet at a higher price simply to keep our customers happy, and we made no price adjustment.

This being said, I would say that calling the current stock of carpet ‘c**p’ is a little over the top – as this is simply not the case!! I have worked with differing qualities of carpets over the years and trust me when I say that the current stock of carpet is best alternative that I have come across.

It would interesting to know where TR Shops Carpet Sets originally come from, raw material wise, because I searched long and hard for a temporary replacement supplier of Wool Carpet and chose what I considered the ‘Best of the Rest’.

I spoke with the manufacturer of our "normal" wool carpet this morning and the problems are still playing a factor in replenishing stocks – the machine is back up and running now, but they have accumulated quite a backorder list in all colours, so stocks of colours are getting made in colour popularity order so it could still be a number of weeks before all colours are back up to full stock levels again.

I have been given by the manufacturer an estimate for stock all colours by the end of October .

I would like to offer my apologies for anyone who felt that the carpets they received off us during this troublesome time were not to their satisfaction, but I hope you can at least understand our prediciment. I am also aware that everyone has differing tastes & views when it comes to colour, quality, originality etc , quite rightly so!

I would also like to address Stuarts comment regarding the fit of our carpets. Over the years we have worked closely with many customers to perfect our patterns to try and ensure that our trim items fit as best they can. However, it is worth noting that we have actually made improvements to our carpet patterns to ensure a better fit than the original Triumph factory carpets. For example on the original factory carpets the main gearbox carpet was a very tight fit and just met the front floor carpets, we have extended the width of the gearbox carpet so it now tucks well under the floor carpets, so now no gaps or underfelt shows.

This is also the case on a number of other carpet pieces in our TR , Austin-Healey & Jaguar range.

As Trim Manufacturers, as apposed to Trim Traders, we offer after sales advice & assistance relating to our products. We will help if we can, so if you feel you have a problem or want some advice please contact us by telephone, fax or email.

I hope this has helped explain the current situation with regards to the Carpet Sets – and hopefully we will be back to business as usual with the top end wool in the next month or two.

Believe me when I say that we have also found this situation most frustrating and cannot wait for it to be resolved.

All the best,

Jonathon Skinner

Managing Director, John Skinner (Manufacturing) Ltd.

Thank you John for your reply on this subject and expanding on the problems encountered.

I have fitted quite a number of carpet sets over the years and they are all problematical in their own ways and arent the easiest things to fit in the confines of a two seater. I believe we covered all of the quality issues at the time in phone calls. (Not appropriate to discuss here) The views I expressed are purely my opinion based my many years experience and also the views of my local trimmer who has over fifty years of experience and one of the very early members of the register.

Due to the fact that I was less than happy with the carpets I didnt charge the customer for them.

The current uninformative thread about hubs is an example of uselessossity.

This thread, where an opinion was expressed about a specific named supplier's product, and that supplier took the trouble to come and make what seems a balanced and honest response, is an example of what the Forum should be about.

Yes, agreed and credit where it's due. I've had a few made-to-order trim items from John Skinner in recent times and have been pleased with the items and service.
