Noisy diff

I had a reconditioned diff put on about 2 years ago when I was forced into having a new chassis.

As it was all done for me by one of the leading TR garages I didn't question the noise as i assumed it was all new and needed to bed in.

I find now that the noise hasn't eased up and either the diff or the prop shaft sound like a thrashing ships propellor when the car is in motion.

Anyone got any ideas? Should I be worried?!

yes, you should be worried. IRS diffs are not quite silent, but neither are they unduly intrusive.

 

'Bedding-in' of diffs is so much guff, if they're put together properly they sound right from the word go - and stay that way.

 

Anything that sounds "like a thrashing ships propellor" has a serious problem . . . which your "leading TR garage" ought to be made aware of pretty damn quick. It'll be interesting to hear of their response.

Definitely go back to the specialist and discuss with them. i am assuming that the mileage is also not that great!!

The IRS Diff became noisy on our 2000MK1 you could actually feel the vibration through the car! On investigating the oil had leaked from the front seal. No oil!

 

Topped the oil up and it became silent(ish) once again. Just a thought, you've probably already checked this.

 

Since had the unit rebuilt. I've also been through two propshafts which can cause all sorts of vibrations and noises and of course loose propshaft bolts?

The 3.45 diff in my 6 was a recon about 6,000 miles ago. It was silent, well, relative to the general din of a TR6, it was silent :P

I replaced it with an old nail of a 3.7, and that hums to itself.

But no thrashing.

 

However, I also had some nasty vibration around 2,500 rpm, that was the propshaft, turned out to be wear in the sliding joint.

 

If your noise is worse on the overrun, then the propshaft front uj is a likely culprit.

If it's worse on acceleration, then the back uj.

 

If it sounds like bearings, could be the diff was set up wrongly, perhaps wrong preload, or has a broken tooth.

It should be quiet; if it’s noisy after a recon, someone hasn’t done their job properly & it won’t get any quieter with running. Assuming all the bearings are OK, it’s most likely they haven’t adjusted the meshing contact between the crownwheel & pinion correctly, which can be a bit of a pain setting up. More serious would be if they got the pinion bearing pre-load wrong. Take it back if you still can!
