Hicks51
I live in Crowthorne in Berkshire (UK) and have a set of painted wire wheels that I want to swap my tyres onto. I called the local Kwikfit but they couldn't guarantee not to scrape off the paint from the rims when fitting. Does anyone know of a tyre place in the area (up to 40 miles) that could do the job reasonably and guarantee not to damage the wires? Thanks, Brian.
BrianC
Don't forget to ask whether they can balance wires properly before you let them loose. Many tyre depots no longer have the appropriate adapters or staff to do the job. I am looking to balance and change tyres on some of the painted wires on Lynda's TR4A in the near future, so this morning I stuck my nose in the door of the local Morgan racing specialists for advice and they gave me the number of the local mobile tyre man that they use who is apparently very good. Hi Brian, I doubt if you will get anyone (sincere) to give you such a guarantee. Swapping tyres is not such a big job, not big money, and if you get such a guarantee from anyone who is sincere about it, they have a lot to lose if they are going to be responsible for respraying the wheels. As long as they fit the tyre over the inside rim, and carefully, any damage will be minimal and not show. AlanR
Alec Pringle
Sorry Brian, but it's an unreasonable expectation. Even a really skilled tyre fitter wouldn't offer such a guarantee. Achieving a scratch-free fitment owes as much, or more, to good luck as to good judgement. Apart from anything else, the paint finish itself has a bearing on the end result. Ask the guys at your local group, Chilterns, for a recommendation; or ask Glen Hewitt at Protek, he's local to you. Cheers, Alec
Hicks51
OK, thanks for the feedback guys. I'll ask the Windsor/Bagshot group and check out a few local places around Sandhurst and be ready with the touch-in paint! Regards, Brian.
