It is actually supposed to be a sound deadening device although how effective it is I dont know. If you have the whole of the front of the engine exposed its probably worth checking the timing chain and tensioner and also fitting new seal at the same time. Stuart. Don Elliott Posted January 7, 2008 Report Share Posted January 7, 2008 I did my TR3A restoration 17 years ago and I removed the tar-like sound deadener before I had it sandblasted and sprayed. It has never caused a problem in 97,000 miles since then and I can't hear any difference between before and after. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Thats it then, new tensioner fitted plus new chain, read somewhere that you can slap some silicon gasket sealer on the outside cover to damp the sound down Thanks Keith Quote Link to post Share on other sites
